Arctic's oldest and thickest sea ice breaks for first time
The Hill ^

The oldest and most robust sea ice in the Arctic has reportedly began breaking up for the first time in recorded history.

The Guardian reported on Tuesday that the ice breaks, which result in water opening up north of Greenland, have happened twice in 2018 because of warm winds and a heat wave caused by climate change.

The sea off the northern coast of Greenland was once referred to as "the last ice area” because of how perpetually frozen it normally is. It was also believed that it would be one of the final northern areas to be impacted by the world's hotter temperatures.

An unusual increase in temperature in February and August have left it susceptible, however, The Guardian reported.

The newspaper noted that the warm winds have pushed the ice farther away from the coast than at any time since satellite records started being kept in the 1970s.

Would the WAPO have used meters in 1922?

Not of their own volition - but when the source (European explorers?) uses meters, and the WAPO "journalist" is unable to convert meters into furlongs, or drams, pounds, or pecks feet, that's what you get.

FTFTA (fixed that for the author) How much ice was there during the time of the dinosaurs? (not much, I'd wager).

The Earth loves ice. Never fear, it will be back one day, with a vengeance. Then, we will WISH we could affect the climate.

https://www.iceagenow.info/underwater-volcanoes-melting-arctic-ice-says-geologist/

from link:

Climate scientists who favor the theory of man-made global warming maintain that the higher melt rate of Arctic sea ice from 1999 to 2007 was entirely due to man-made CO2 emissions, Kamis continues.

Natural forces play dominate role in sea ice extent

However, it is clear to most scientists, he continues, that non-atmospheric natural forces play the dominate role in sea ice extent and thickness.

These natural forces include variations in the Earth’s orbit, long-term cyclic changes in deep-ocean currents, and most importantly geologically induced heat and chemically charged fluid flow from deep ocean faults and volcanoes.

Even though the October 12 event was associated with an extensive earthquake swarm, a huge methane release, and a significant series of volcanic eruptions along the Gakkel Ridge, “it was, and still is dismissed as insignificant by most climate scientists advocating the theory of man-made global warming,” says Kamis

But many scientists now realize that the 1999-2007 Gakkel Ridge heat and chemically charged fluid flow event was the root cause of accelerated the Arctic sea ice melting rate.

Okay, but I’d bet that there were plenty of people at the WAPO back then who could convert meters to feet in their heads.

So their use of the words, “first time ever”, and “never before”, and “caused by climate change”, are a little dramatic. They have been recording it since 1970. “Climate change” is when the climate changes for any reason. “First time ever” means, ever since we have been recording, which is a few decades. The species is 250,000 years old, Homo Erectus is 6 million years old and the earth is 4.5 billion years old, give or take a half billion years. In just the past 40 thousand years ice was down to France. And we had no carbon footprint at all.
