Red Line Drawn: US Will Never Recognize Russian-Ruled Crimea
Western Journal ^

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says the United States will never recognize Russia’s annexation of Crimea and will continue to insist that Ukraine’s territorial integrity be restored.

In a statement released Wednesday by the State Department, Pompeo said the U.S. will hold to its long-standing principle of refusing to recognize Kremlin claims of sovereignty over territory seized by force, in violation of international law.

He called for Russia to respect principles and “end its occupation of Crimea.”

The statement was released shortly before Pompeo was to testify before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where he is expected to face tough questioning about President Donald Trump’s summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Even the 1954 Supreme Soviet vote to do this was defective, as there was not a quorum.

You have to admit, that was funny.

But I think you and many others miss the most important point.

Power has bearing on Justice.

Otherwise we’d all be speaking Spanish, French or the Queen’s English.

And Russia will undertake existential war to protect their traditional sphere of influence, just as we would in the Americas.

And there is nothing in ANY province of Ukraine that is worth a single US asset, life or dollar. Or Montenegro, or Bulgaria, Romania, Latvia etc.

One of the biggest mistakes in the history of the US was the expansion of NATO to countries in which we have zero interest...just to squeeze the Russians.

We just haven’t paid the price of that mistake yet.

*** The Ukrainian government of Viktor Yanukovich fell under a popular neocon globohomo revolt in Kiev ***

Well then it makes even more sense that Crimea would want to separate.

A terrific book on this subject:

“Savage Continent: Europe in the aftermath of WW2”

https://www.amazon.com/Savage-Continent-Europe-Aftermath-World/dp/125003356X

All was not sweetness and light in E. Europe after VE day, and both borders and populations moved with lots of bloodshed, ethnic cleansing and hard feelings.

Amen. Unless it’s just a “wink and nod” bogus bargaining chip primarily aimed at appeasing the Dems at home.

Now we’re just waiting for the Archduke of Montenegro to be assassinated to trigger WW 4.

The declaration is of no real effect simply because Putin anf dor that matter the world know that there is no outside force capable of making Russia resurrender the Crimea.

Crimea is Russia, not Ukraine

Also (he went on to say) neither the British subjugation of Wales, nor the Italian occupation of Sicily.

“Are the people of Crimea not allowed self determination?”

Well, you know, “self determination” is usually done by the “self”, not by a big neighbor with nuclear weapons.

Oh look.

Another braindead neocon all upset that people actually study history.

It’s pretty damned stupid to whine about someone posting a series of true statement that every military veteran who actually took the optiona proscribed professional reading courses during the cold war could tell you.
But you had to go there didn’t you lodi? Do you know what a jackass you look like to every troop who has read our expositions on what the Soviet Union taught in their war colleges, and then followed it up with further reading?

“The Russians in Crimea are not recent, illegal, invaders. They have been there for centuries.”

So Herr Hitler was justified in annexing Silesia from Czechoslovakia and partitioning Poland to reclaim Prussian territory, eh?

[Only the Perpetual War Party wants to go to war with Russia over Crimea or Eastern Ukraine.]

I agree. Neville Chamberlain’s success at arranging for the transfer of the ethnic German-majority Sudetenland to Germany turned out to be the foundation of decades of lasting peace. At long last, German territorial ambitions in Europe had been sated and the German Chancellor was content to count his winnings rather than engage in more military ventures on the European continent.

The sad thing is Ukraine lost it long term ability to maintain its sovereignty (and hence its control of Crimea!). They did this when accepted the “agreement/treaty” that the USA & UK could “guarantee” it’s sovereignty if it gave up the nuclear weapons it inherited from the collapse of the USSR. USA & UK guarantees on that are worth a stale tepid Starbucks coffee! Does anyone really believe we & the UK will go to DEFCON-Launch over Ukraine?

I know it may seem superfluous, but it’s almost always advisable to add the “/sarc” notation. I can’t be positive, but since posting on FR for the last couple of years, I’ve detected some, who I’m assuming are younger FReepers, some of whom seem not to have had the advantage of being taught much history in school, even with such obvious sarcasm as your post. (Ten thousand pardons to the yungins’, among us, who are probably better versed in history than I am) ;)

So you must support giving the Southwest back to Mexico, etc, ad infinitum back to cro-magnon’s stealing the territory of the neanderthals.

Good luck with your project.

Suggested reading:

“Savage Continent: Europe in the aftermath of WW2”

https://www.amazon.com/Savage-Continent-Europe-Aftermath-World/dp/125003356X

All was not sweetness and light in E. Europe after VE day, and both borders and populations moved with lots of bloodshed, ethnic cleansing and hard feelings left over for generations.

As they have in that region as empires waxed and waned for thousands of years.

If you think that the current border between Ukraine and Russia is worth going to WW4 over, go for it. A border that has shifted like the wind a dozen times in the century alone.
