Rep. James Clyburn (D., S.C.), the House assistant minority leader, said Wednesday that congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will need to wait her turn before she considers joining Democratic Party leadership.
"I would ask her to remember how long I had to wait to get here," Clyburn said on Buzzfeed's "AM to DM."
Clyburn also said many younger activists don't have the proper respect for older ones, such as himself, who dealt with segregation and civil rights in the Jim Crow-era South.
"Lets not forget the history of all of this," Clyburn said. "And I think that all of the folks who have that mentality seem not to give much respect to those of us who sat in jails, as I did, so that they would have the kind of activities or the kinds of rights that they have today."
"So do I get any credit for being on the cutting edge of all of that?" Clyburn asked. "Or should the credit go to my children and grandchildren who are the beneficiaries of it? I think that we have to balance this out."
Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old democratic socialist who shocked the political world in June with an upset primary win over Rep. Joe Crowley (D., N.Y.) in New York's 14th Congressional District, has aggravated some Democrats, particularly after she accused Crowley of continuing to campaign against her.
Clyburn also responded Wednesday to growing calls within the Democratic Party for new leadership. He has served in House Democratic leadership with Reps. Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and Steny Hoyer (Md.) for several years, most of which has been in the minority.
"If I begin to show some senility, my wife would be the first one to tell me. And my children would second those emotions very forcefully," Clyburn said.

What idiot nominated her for a leadership position?
Not being in the Dem establishment’s good graces actually makes her more of a threat in the long run...and increases her appeal among the lefties.
We need more young conservatives to step onto the scene.
Maybe win the election first?
Like Madam President?
It seems like Mr. Clyburn is saying that Ms. Cortez is acting “uppity.” That almost seems racist on his part.
Clyburn does sound a little bitter, though. “You young whippersnappers better respect your elders you hear me?”
Clyburn is an ass who doesn’t know when to shut up and this woman is a moron who hasn’t been elected to anything yet and doesn’t know when to shut up. This should be fun to watch.
Clyburn did not do whatever he supposedly did for anyone but himself and his people (blacks).
Is she elected yet? Or did she just win the primary?
Cortez shoulda taken a couple of classes there at BU in Chicken Counting.
“Yes, but I’m a 28 year old millennial and I WANT IT RIGHT NOW.”
He's only in leadership because Pelosi stepped back into the minority leader role when she lost the House, and everyone else was pushed down a chair. Clyburn was the last man standing when the music stopped.
To avoid the optics of the Democrats kicking the only black man out of leadership, they created the Assistant Minority Leader position for him.

Clyburn just doesn’t understand the Democratic part of Socialism.
This is the Democrat Party, you don't need to accomplish anything, just say the right things.
This young birdbrain replacing that old birdbrain Nancy Pelosi as Minority Leader would be... AWESOME and one of the most hilarious things ever.
God sent “Trumpie” a gift in this nutcase, immature, ill informed brat, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. If the GOP had any brains, they would contest her for her congressional run, spending the necessary money and resources to put forth a powerful, vocal, candidate to campaign in her district.
She would still win the seat...but, she would be spoiled badly...it’s worth the investment and effort to bring her down. GOP...get on it...like right now!!!
