Gowdy: Trump missed ‘good opportunity’ to confront Putin
NY Post ^ | July 22, 2018 | Mark Moore

A top Republican on Sunday criticized President Trump for missing a “good opportunity” to confront Moscow about election meddling during his controversial news conference with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

“The president missed, I think, a really good opportunity to distinguish the United States from any other country, but especially from Russia,” Rep. Trey Gowdy, the chair of the House Oversight Committee, said on “Fox News Sunday.”

The South Carolina lawmaker urged Trump to listen to his advisers and the intelligence community when they tell him the Kremlin interfered in the 2016 presidential election.

If he doesn’t listen, they should step down, he said.

> ‘good opportunity’ to confront Putin

Then what?

How does confronting Putin publicly help the US in ANY WAY?

How does that stop future Russian meddling?

How does that accomplish anything other than angering Putin and making him less likely to cooperate in other areas (e.g. Syria) and more likely to meddle in elections?

Maybe I’m missing something but I haven’t heard a single critic talk about the path/strategy they have for moving forward with our relationship after a public confrontation. Maybe they just don’t want any cooperation, but Putin is in position to help or hurt us in many ways. I’d prefer the help where we can make deals and not having him pissed at our president in things we can’t make deals anyhow.

I wonder how many times all these bloviators “stood up to Putin?”

Zero. I bet they haven’t even wrote nasty letters to the editor against him in Pravda, Russia Today, Sputnik, or the Moscow Times.

Uh, Trey? Trump can “confront” Putin anytime he wants to. He’s the President of the United States, right?

What the hell is Gowdy talking about. Who cares if Trump confronts Putin. We want Putin to keep a ban on NK. And to help us with ISIS. And to help us with terrorists. We are not two sisters bickering over a boyfriend. Confronting is worthless. Russia has been publicly and privately rebuked and he has been punished in several ways.

Gowdy was a major disappointment to me.

Trey Gowdy is a lawyer. His entire adult life has been spent as a big government Republican, who is favor of spending money and having elaborate hearings with 4 and 5 syllable words flying through the air.

And no results.

Trey Gowdy has never really been expected to produce actual results, except guilty verdicts when he was a prosecutor. Did he get people in jail for what they did, or what they plea-bargained for? I don't know, but based on his results in being in House hearings, he seems to be thunder and lightning for talk time and not much for actual punishment of bad people.

Keeping Trey Gowdy in perspective and aligning your expectations accordingly will help with future assessments, so you can set your expectations accordingly and not be disappointed. He's for show, not for results.

Congress desperately does not want the truth of the Kenyanesian Usurpation to get out.

Almost all of them are the ones responsible for that violation of the Constitution and the myriad crimes that followed.

Up to this point I held that relatively benign view of Gowdy.

Now he can go to Hell.

Anytime the press uses “top” as an adjective, the name of a betraying weasel follows.

One does not “confront” the leader of one of the
biggest nations in the world on first meeting.

That would be Trump also, would they have preferred
that Putin “confronted” a US President on their first
public contact? I would hope not.
