Can Elizabeth Warren win back blue-collar Democrats from President Trump in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania?
Its a question many Democrats are pondering as Warren one of the leading contenders for her partys presidential nomination, if she chooses to run in 2020 goes back and forth with the president over immigration and other issues.
Warren (D-Mass.) has shown an ability to rally and excite progressives, shes a proven fundraiser and she has policy bona fides from her work in the Senate. Yet there are creeping doubts among some Democrats that shes the best candidate to take on Trump.
Some worry the former Harvard professor will have a tough time winning back the Rust Belt centrists and independents who abandoned Hillary Clinton and Democrats for Trump.
I just cant see a blue-collar, Rust Belt guy voting for her, said one Democratic strategist who has worked on presidential campaigns. I think the party needs to be realistic about that.
Some Democrats almost certainly remain shellshocked from the last election after Trumps surprise win. He became the first Republican to win the states of Pennsylvania and Michigan in a presidential election since 1988 and the first Republican to win Wisconsin since President Reagan in 1984.
If Democrats dont retake those states in 2020, their chances of winning the Electoral College will fall.
Teeth-gnashing over who is best-positioned to take on Trump, as a result, is already taking place ahead of the midterm elections.
Warrens gender and her political identity as a voice on the left are both likely to be issues for primary voters sizing up Democratic candidates in potential head-to-head matchups with Trump. Would she be stronger than former Vice President Joe Biden? What about Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)? Does the party need the face of a new political generation, such as Sens. Kamala Harris (Calif.), Cory Booker (N.J.) or Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.)?
Warren has her advocates, who say the senators anti-corporate economic message will resonate with the types of voters who left the party for Trump.
Jesse Ferguson, who served as a spokesman for Clintons 2016 presidential campaign, said Warren has a powerful economic message that resonates everywhere.
Democratic pollster Celinda Lake said Warren is the perfect candidate to oppose Trump because she has the ability to go straight at him on his economic policies.
She also argued that Trumps repeated attacks on Warren suggest the White House sees her as a threat.
I think this man understands his brand very well and understands his populist appeal very, very well, and he realizes how threatening to him she is on his brand, Lake said.
Warrens office declined to comment for this story.
They need to find Cory a Beard to marry quick .
Sure. "Make America Like Venezuela!" is the key to winning back the Rust Belt.
Apparently you don't have to be all that bright to be a Democratic pollster.
Kamala Harris...
Not a Natural Born Citizen, just an Anchor Baby with Cred.
Got her start in Politics by servicing (Married) Willie Brown’s Brown Willie while being rewarded with a well paying CA State Commission Job that thrust her (yeah, I said it) into the Liberal Political Utopia of Sacramento and on to the National Stage.
A lying Harvard professor who used to be a Conservative Republican.
Will she run as:
1. Elizabeth Warren, using the surname of her first husband.
2. Elizabeth Herring, using her maiden name.
3. Elizabeth Mann, using the surname of her current husband.
3. Chief Walking Eagle (because she is too full of crap to fly)?
Every day the Democratic party moves more and more to the left as its moderates keep running away like the house is on fire.
By 2020 the likeliest Democratic candidate for president will be Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and if she wants to balance her ticket with a Native American she won’t turn to Fauxahontas, instead she’ll find a real Navaho chieftain somewhere with a Ph.D. in hating America from an Ivy League college.
Short answer: no.
If Kamala runs, shell win the black vote and steamroll Warren. 2nd coming of Obama and all that.
I don't think so. First of all, she doesn't have the "first Black President" thing going for her. Secondly, she won't be as much of an unknown that people can project their own thoughts and emotions onto as Obama was. Third, she doesn't quicken the pulses of African-American women like Obama did: he was a (half) Black guy who married a Black woman from the 'hood, and Kamala is a (half) Black woman who married a well-off White guy. That doesn't go over well with the sisters.
One thing is certain. There will be no more white men as democrat nominees for president.
Remember how Biden clowned around while debating Paul Ryan and Ryan chose to lose with dignity? Trump would have mocked Biden's behavior as idiotic.
Would Hillary pick her as VP? That might be a good ticket.
Except that being famous for being a wealthy politician’s mistress only elevates one to elected office in a few coastal areas. Those places have high populations but they dont have the electoral votes to carry the day.
Also, her anchor baby status won’t play.
Dem platform: We oppose Trump on X, Y, and Z.
That is not a very substantive platform to run on.
Michigan has many college towns and depressed areas they want Jobs not Hope head fakes. Trump has put a spotlight on Obamas incompetence.
It will be like the Boston Tea Party at every campaign appearance!
Will she play in Peoria?
She could do a reenactment of the Boston Tea Party, face paint and all.
If they have to mull it over, then she aint the one.
The Mother-in-law from Hell.
