The killing of five staffers at an Annapolis, Md., newspaper is an attack on all of us.

By us, we mean not just journalists — but all Americans. For the foundation of our country depends on a free press able to probe and report without fear of retribution.

While all politically motivated mass killings assaults all Americans in the sense that are national resolve is to resolve political differences at the ballot box, not with violence.

However, journalisits are not singularly or specially entitled to our rejection of political violence, any more than any other Americans. They deserve the same respect as other Americans, but not more than. They are not somehow “above” all other Americans.

I have long ago disabused myself from buying what the press is selling about itself as a “free press”.

I grew up thinking the term meant the press was POLITICALLY independent and could be relied to just report facts.

I learned over my liftetime that “the press” is very poltical animal and the opposite of being “free” of bias or political agendas.

Because of that “the press” has lost the respect it thinks it is due from me. I do not consider it “free” at all. It is a slave to political bias.
