Why Evangelicals Want Trump to Pick Amy Coney Barrett for the Supreme Court
CBN ^

The retirement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy has conservative Christians excited about a huge opportunity to shift American laws on issues like religious freedom and abortion. President Donald Trump has noted he has a list of 25 names as possible Supreme Court candidates, but there's one name that pro-lifers seem to really love.

CBN's Chief Political Correspondent David Brody says evangelical circles are buzzing about Amy Coney Barrett.

"Many of my sources, evangelical in nature, love her. They believe that she is the one that if they had their dream pick that she would be the one," Brody said on the 700 Club Friday. "Barrett has been very outspoken of her Catholic views and God."

Barrett is a mother of seven children and a devout Catholic. At just 46-years-old, Barrett holds promise for a potential decades-long term on the bench. She once clerked for Justice Antonin Scalia, taught law at Notre Dame, and has reported conservative views about protecting religious freedom.

A Barrett nomination could face a very tough fight in the Senate. Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) opposed Barrett vehemently during her Senate confirmation battle for US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Feinstein even implemented a religious test, blasting Barrett for her deep Catholic faith, calling it "dogma."

"When you read your speeches, the conclusion one draws is that the dogma lives loudly within you and that's of concern when you come to big issues that large numbers of people have fought for years," Feinstein said.

Can we just have someone who respects the Constitution, as written? I don’t want someone who puts their (pick a faith) before the constitution -EVEN if it is MY faith. That is exactly what the founders did NOT want.

I have no knowledge of this woman’s positions, ruling history, so I am not, at this time, either for or against. BUT, if the sole criteria is her strong Catholic faith - no thank you.

There should not be a litmus test. However, when the court is massively catholic and jewish, something isn’t right. Maybe it is that they are coming from the same regions or social circles, but something isn’t kosher about it.

if 6 of the 9 justices were Baptist, and the other three were Jehovahs witnesses, people would wonder how that happened.

And mark my words. Put a mommy on the court, and soon it’ll be open borders, “reasonable” gun laws and other such things. Women in combat units will never go away, etc.

Women are nesters.

And whose primary view of the constitution is NOT: This is what I think should be in the constitution or that congress should make law.

I’m an Evangelical and she’s not my dream pick either.

I don’t like when these Christian organizations try to speak for all of us.

I just want a strict Constitutionalist, who will interpret the law as it is written.

Spare me anyone who thinks the Constitution is “evolving.”

I’m not really comfortable with any of the candidates.

I don’t know enough about them.

I also think the judge experience is being overemphasized.

Cases come to the Supreme Court with all the relevant precedents enumerated.

The federal judicial process is known by the litigants’ lawyers.

My choice would be Erick Erickson, who went to law school.

I have no knowledge of the woman’s past judicial opinions and haven’t heard much detail, but I’ve heard several say they love the fact that she has seven children. That would definitely be an in-your-face, silent message to the pro-abortionists and population controllers.

Need more to go on than that. Anthony Kennedy went to Mass daily. Daily! And he was one of the left's best friends on every 'social' issue from abortion to gay marriage.

No more “womyn,” please. Call me a sexists, but women don’t belong on a court with no recourse.

Every one we’ve had has been an unmitigated disaster, starting with O’Connor. Even if they start out ‘conservative,’ they quickly devolve into touchy-feely squishes divorced from the responsibilities of the seat.

Scalia had 5 children if I am not mistaken. Barrett doesn’t just talk the talk, she walks the walk. You’ll never find a lib female judge today who’s had 7 children. Many are childless.

‘Sen. Dick Durbin also probed into Barrett's religious beliefs during that 2017 hearing, asking, “Do you consider yourself an orthodox Catholic?”’

“You are either Catholic or you are not. There is no in between.”

Monsignor Morris.

I want someone who knows what natural born citizen means.

Do you know what it means? Most people don’t. Including the Framers, many SCOTUS judges, lawmakers, and FReepers.

Especially Freepers.

“I want someone who knows what natural born citizen means.”

I would prepare a ~50-page questionnaire based on Constitutional terms for candidates to clearly state their opinions.

Mr. Obama, natural born? Justify your answer.

Senator McCain, natural born? Justify your answer.

What is “excessive bail”?

What is not “speedy” for a trial?

Name key factors that make a search reasonable.

Name key factors that make a search unreasonable.

As for “abortion”, what Constitutional factors apply and why?
