Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the U.S. Supreme Court Wednesday, precipitating a cataclysmic election year confirmation battle.
Though the White House has publicly identified as many as 25 possible candidates to succeed Kennedy, the early favorites for the pick are drawn from a small crop of young appeals court judges popular in Washingtons conservative legal circles.
Speaking in the Oval Office shortly after Kennedys announcement, Trump confirmed he would draw his selection from a list of possible Supreme Court nominees assembled during the campaign. Five individuals were added to that list in November 2017.
These early favorites include Judges Brett Kavanaugh of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, Raymond Kethledge of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and Diane Sykes of the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

TCruz has recommended Senator Mike Lee. Would Lee be able to vote on his own confirmation if he were selected?
Mike Lee is a never Trump operative who did everything possible to sabotage the Trump campaign and help get Hillary Clinton elected.
Mike Lee is not a conservative. He is not a patriotic American.
Mike Lee is a slimy, two faced, never Trump Clinton operative.
He should never be appointed to SCOTUS.

I agree completely and am very disappointed that Ted Cruz would consider Lee for anything except maybe dog catcher in Siberia.
“I think the republicans should go to war with democrats by having the president pick a young, gifted, conservative black woman.”
That’s a patently racist statement! President Trump should pick the PERSON he feels will be the best one for the job! I am damned tired of all this bull$hit about “racial balance.” If there is a qualified Conservative Black Woman on his list, she should not be there because of the color of her skin. Clarence Thomas is a fine Justice, who should not have been treated the way that he was in his confirmation hearings. That also was bull$hit!
That would be glorious.
But Id save that honor for the Ruth Bader Ginsburg replacement.
Not Pryor of AL: he was the one that moved against Judge Moore on the Ten Commandments monument.
And a Never-Trumper, a lousy piano player, a Bushie and God knows what else. No Condi! No more women - it’s turning into a Hadassah society as is. Too many wise yentas.
HIs only future is in the Dem party, so he very well could attempt to block the nomination. Someone will have to offer him something in his retirement to keep him in line.
And it’s no coincidence that all the professional Never Trumpers have come out in lockstep today pitching Mike Lee. Shapiro, Levin, Erickson..
NEVER trust a never trumper
>>Condi?<<
Not a trustworthy Conservative. Could easily drift to the left under pressure from the likes of demented skanks like Maxine Waters.
Maybe he can find one from a red state that has a dem senator. Make them anger Republican voters or their own. Either way, we win.
Well, Cruz has done some things to earn distrust from many of us conservative folks... ..to be sure.
But, he’s more experienced inside the Supreme Court than anybody on the Presidents list. Plus, he’s only 47 years old and plus his conservative voting record is second to none. Finally, of the 9 cases, my recollection is that he won the majority of them. Last but not least, he is a bonafide minority which will appease “some”.
Here’s a wiki cut and paste:
Cruz has authored 70 U.S. Supreme Court briefs and presented 43 oral arguments, including nine before the United States Supreme Court. Cruz’s record of having argued before the Supreme Court nine times is more than any practicing lawyer in Texas or any current member of Congress.
>>Personally - Id go with Ted Cruz. Putting him there would make the rest of them quit within a week.<<
I think Cruz would be the most reliably Conservative Justice of any of the contenders, and possibly even more of an Originalist than the late, great Justice Scalia.
Sykes is too old!
P.S. Amy Coney Barrett clerked for Justice Scalia
I would be willing to give her an extensive physical so we can be sure that she has the stamina for the job...
>> Regardless of the gender or color of skin he will nominate an imminently qualified person.
He or she might not be qualified yet, but will be soon.
He said we need intelligence.
Make him show up to the Senate floor to vote - no absentee voting for Juan
Amy Barrett has seven children according to Wikipedia. So she has demonstrated that she has more than enough stamina to serve for a long time on SCOTUS. I know that youll be bitterly disappointed to realize that your offer of a physical examination will therefore be not needed. ;-)
Despite the way he badly behaved during the election, I believe Ted Cruz would make a fabulous SC jurist.
Unfortunately, he is up for election this year, and if he was to accept the SC nomination, Beto O’Rourke would hammer him for running for a seat he has no intention of keeping.
