Austin [Texas] Skirting Sanctuary City Law

Texas’ capital city is once again thumbing its nose at the state government, this time by defying Gov. Greg Abbott and the Texas Legislature’s recently passed ban on sanctuary cities.

Last week, the Austin City Council unanimously approved a pair of “Freedom City” resolutions that target racial disparity in Austin Police Department arrests and how police officers are to react to illegal immigrants.

While the first is largely eye-roll worthy (par for the course as far as Austin City Council resolutions go), it does instruct officers to refrain from arresting minority individuals for “low-level offenses” such as smoking marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and minor larceny.

According to city data, those crimes frequently end in arrest for black and Latino residents. Austin’s openly Socialist city councilman, Greg Casar, said tamping down on the arrests and ignoring the crimes could result in fewer illegal immigrants being apprehended and thus deported.

“Poor people of color in our city are over-punished and over-incarcerated,” said Casar, who pushed for the resolutions. “If people are being arrested less, we can also prevent people from being put in the deportation pipeline.”

The second asks APD leaders to skeptically scrutinize requests for assistance by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It also asks officers inquiring as to the immigration status of an individual to inform them they have a constitutional right to remain silent.

On passage of the pair of resolutions, Casar declared the effort an “important win for racial justice and immigrant rights in Texas.”

They’re likewise major losses for taxpayers, citizen safety, and the rule of law.

Both matters are likely to elicit review by the Texas Legislature when it reconvenes next year—the latest problematic examples of the need for a statewide pre-emption law to reign in rogue city governments in open defiance of state law.

And speaking of open defiance of state law, Austin is also currently leading a number of other cities in suing the State of Texas to prevent the implementation of Senate Bill 4, the ban on sanctuary cities signed by Gov. Greg Abbott last summer. Judges have left the law in place while the legal question is decided.

It sure seems to be!

A Liberal Ex-Boss of mine (who, amazingly, became a very good friend) just moved to a town about 30 miles from Austin so she could be near her daughter and Grandchildren.

I pray for her (and the kids) every day. Talk about rolling the dice and taking your chances!

Have you read the stats on Illegals killing Americans via drunk driving? That ALONE should send chills up everyone’s spine. :(

The City of Austin has a population of a million people. Of that, probably 35% smoke pot.

I don’t guess that APD is now or has ever gone into areas around the University of Texas or wealthy areas of town and started busting people for smoking pot.

A simple citation for smoking pot is an appropriate and cost effective solution.

Based on their example - any citizens of Austin can flaunt the law in the same way.

- Unanimously approved by Austin City Council

I.e., illegal immigrants have a right to sit around on our public sidewalks and parks and smoke weed.

This is no doubt typical across the nation. How can anyone be confused about the agenda? What price will these anti-Americans pay for their attempts to physically remake America under color of law?

Austin is the Berkeley of the South and needs to be walled off.

“illegal immigrants”?????

Let’s call them what they are - alien invaders.

And let’s call those who aid these invaders what they are - traitors.

Now that we have everything properly defined, let’s hammer out an effective and lasting policy to deal with both.

“Austin is the Berkeley of the South and needs to be walled off.”

The State of Texas would not survive without Austin’s tax base.

Austin is well on its way to becoming a s**thole city. No smart person would want to settle there. The crime is getting terrible, and the downtown area is awash with homeless human debris.

Are you kidding? As long as the oil holds out in the Permian Basin, Texas can meet its bills. West Texas (ranching and the oil patch) should become a state, North Texas (D/FW) another, Houston another, and South Texas (the Valley) can decide if they want to become independent or become part of Mexico. That would leave the weirdos in Austin on their own island to smoke weed and go broke.

Wall it off and give me the chance to prove you wrong. We do not need them. Without all it’s illegals, maybe my taxes will be lowered. Austin’s taxes are running people out of the city but it’s high taxes have expanded to 100 commuter miles around it. There were exactly 50% of the homes on our street up for sale a couple years ago thanks to high taxes. What were once 2 weeks of income is now nearly 4 months of income in property taxes. All thanks to Austin’s libs. The city can fall into a sink hole and the state would be better off.
