Amanda Werners friend was dining at MXDC when he recognized none other than Kirstjen Nielsen at the sleek downtown Mexican restaurantjust a day after the Department of Homeland Security Secretary defended the separation of children from their parents at the border.
He immediately texted Werner: DHS Secretary Nielsen is having dinner at MXDC. Can you tweet on your account? Get activists here. He sent a snapshot of the Trump Cabinet member in a black suit checking her phone at a nearby table.
Werner, who identifies as transmasculine and uses they/them pronouns, is a campaign strategist for legal advocacy group Public Justice. But in the past year, Werner has also made a hobby out of confronting the rich and powerful. Last October, they went viral after dressing up as the Monopoly Man and photo-bombing the CEO of Equifax during a Senate hearing about the companys data breach. More recently, they showed up as a Russian troll at the congressional hearing for Mark Zuckerberg.
Werners protests are mostly solo, but they texted at least 20 friends, messaged another 15 or so on Facebook, reached out to a couple organizing groups, and blasted the Nielsen sighting out on Twitter. Members of Metro DC Democratic Socialists of America seized on the call to action and rallied its members and followers to meet at the restaurant and confront Nielsen.
Encountering powerful and controversial people shopping for groceries, dining at restaurants, or hitting up SoulCycle has always been a normal facet of DC life. And for the most part, theres an unspoken code that we allow them to go about their daily lives uninterrupted.
Within about ten minutes, others started to show up. In total, the protest included about a dozen people, Werner says. Among them was Margaret McLaughlin, a member of MDCDSAs steering committee.

Who knows, who cares?
my husband wants to wear a MAGA hat everywhere just so he can punch some punk in the face. Lovely. I hope he doesn’t!!
so i guess it’s an ugly girl who decided to take the easy way out and just live as a man.
As the old jingle goes - "Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't". ;-)
thankyou
Because dc just instituted a $15 an hour wage to tipped workers. Thats a clear signal that they shouldnt need tips anymore.
When the servers are receiving an hourly rate of $15/hour, the “tip” is now included in their wages. That’s the European Continental custom and you don’t tip. Servers don’t get both, at least not for me.
This has nothing to do with the boorish behavior of these Democrat jerks and probably belongs on another thread. But, I will not tolerate Progressive behavior in restaurants by their political stunt with $15/hour wage or with these tantrums. I will go elsewhere, and this owner must know that many others will do the same.
Just so!
The article mentions the manager asked them to leave. They did not, and that is a crime. So the DOJ lawyer, Allison Hrabar can be sanctioned since she broke the law in her so called expression of her First Amendment Right.
She harassed K. Nielsen, and she should pay the price.
So this was basically a mainstream Democrat group.
A tip is not an entitlement.
Good service = good tip.
Bad service, I leave a token and hold the balance for the next GOOD server.
“A tip is not an entitlement. Good service = good tip.”
Well put.
Metro DC Democratic Socialists of America——and EMPLOYEES of our Federal Government. Collecting paychecks & benefits while fighting against every single taxpayer in the USA.
All need to be fired. No fly list. NO rehire lists.
Although very few, they had professionally produced signs, a megaphone and media cameras covering them.
It's like the meeting between Bill Clinton and Loretta Lynch on the tarmac out in Phoenix.
Just happened to be there.
BILLY RAY VALENTINE: Right.
RANDOLPH DUKE: It belongs to you.
BILLY RAY VALENTINE: Yeah, I like my home. It's very nice.
BILLY RAY VALENTINE: I have nice taste in houses.
RANDOLPH DUKE: Everything here is yours.
BILLY RAY VALENTINE: This is my stuff?
RANDOLPH DUKE: Your own property.
BILLY RAY VALENTINE: My own personal shit.
RANDOLPH DUKE: You understand?
BILLY RAY VALENTINE: Yeah, I like that. You know what I like most? The curtains, it's beautiful the way I've set this place up. This is something else. I like it. The cabinets. Beautiful. I suppose you'll give me this TV set for free?
RANDOLPH DUKE: That's right.
BILLY RAY VALENTINE: Everything here is mine? I guess the stereo's mine too?
RANDOLPH DUKE: Absolutely.
BILLY RAY VALENTINE: This is too much. I could really dig this. You know why? This happens to me every week.
“Werner, who identifies as transmasculine..”
These types have so much mental frustration. They can’t (and don’t) think clearly.
Don't waste your time. You're too smart and they're too stupid to listen, much less understand any logic or reasoning you'd be expressing during your counter-protest.
If you've not been to the District of Corruption before, there's much to see. I personally recommend the National Archives to see the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence. I was fortunate enough to be in D.C. on the Fourth of July some years ago and saw the live in-character reading of the Declaration of Independence on the steps of the National Archives and later the Fourth of July Fireworks from the steps of the Lincoln Monument.
A visit to Arlington National Cemetery to witness the changing of the guard is also in order. Very moving.
In summary, enjoy your trip and ignore the idiots.
