A man accused of stealing handguns apparently shot himself after authorities chased the U-Haul truck he was driving across the Inland Empire Wednesday afternoon.
The pursuit began in Santa Ana, on the eastbound 22 Freeway near where it meets Interstate 5, according to the California Highway Patrol. It had since wound its way through Orange County and the Riverside area, winding up on the 15 Freeway in San Bernardino County.
While still scaling the pass, around 6 p.m., the pickups front left tire apparently blew out and was sending a trail of smoke and shreds of rubber behind the vehicle.
A short time later, the vehicle pulled to the side of the freeway. The driver could be seen with a handgun pointed at his own neck.
Officers at the scene eventually removed his limp body from the drivers seat and began rendering medical aid. Paramedics soon responded as well and were seen loading him into the back of an ambulance on a stretcher.

They’ll completely replace the cab of the truck or total the whole thing.
Might have been a redneck hey watch this moment. I steal a pistol and have ammo. Id play around for awhile before started trying to hit me.
I can’t imagine the mess on the headliner...
We don’t know what was going thru his mind (except for the bullet). We hear too many stories where looney or evil shooters take out people then shoot themselves. I always wish they’d shot themselves first. Maybe that happened here.
Wow, it sure did.
Blow-outs are a bitch, but not that bad!
Bones: “Apparently he’s dead, Jim”.
Jim: “What gave you that clue?”
Bones: “I ‘think’ that big hole in his head means something serious happened to him. Plus the fact that he’s not breathing, but I could be wrong”.
Jim: “Your next job will be as a reporter”.
Many get live coverage and most of those are entertaining. Then comes along a tragic one like this.
Ouch. Bullet exited the roof of the truck. Assuming it went through his brain first, that’s the end of him. Inconsiderate way to go — leaving a mess like that behind for someone else to clean up.
I wonder what u haul charges for that ?
