Norway will ask the United States to double the number of U.S. troops stationed in the country and deploy them nearer the border with Russia, the government said Tuesday.
The announcement came after nine nations along NATO's eastern flank called Friday for the alliance to bolster its presence in their region: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.
Oslo said it wants to boost the troop numbers to 700 and station them further north at Setermoen, 420 kilometres (260 miles) from Russia.
The U.S. deployment agreement would also be extended from the current six-month renewable periods to five years.
"The defense of Norway depends on the support of our NATO allies, as is the case in most other NATO countries," said Defense Minister Frank Bakke-Jensen in a statement.
"For this support to work in times of crises and war, we are totally dependent on joint training and exercises in times of peace," he added.

Norway just nominated Trump for the Nobel Prize. Do they think that will sway Trump’s mind?
Interesting thread. The Norwegians have a longstanding history of allowing the pre-positioning of US war materiel at locations around the country. Then we just fly our Marines in and marry them up with that materiel if the balloon goes up. That’s been going on at least to back in the 80s.
And back in the day, they didn’t have a professional NCO corps, so they had officers pulling guard duty if the object being guarded was important. Their draftees only served for 6 months.
The Danes were the feckless ones at that time. They couldn’t convince enough of their folks to become F-16 pilots, so we had to “lend” them some of ours to fly their planes.
No. Man-up your local girlee men to do the job, AND pay your DUES you lutefisk loonies!
Agreed. Bring the boys home.
Merely one more example of Drumpf’s collusion with the Russians! </sarc>
Unfortunately, that would be a Dhimmibtalking point. The delusion is deep with them.
“Norway will ask the United States to double the number of U.S. troops stationed in the country and deploy them nearer the border with Russia, the government said Tuesday.”
Sure. They should get out their checkbook.
IMO. we have NOTHING to worry about concerning Russia.
Only some. They seem to be improving but it has taken a long time.
Why? So long as they can leech and ride on the coat tails of others?
Tell them we will allocate some target plots of ICBM’s to the buffer area. Would that give them a warm and fuzzy feeling?
Marines are not garrison troops, they’re assault/shock troops.
U.S. Marines have trained in Norway going back decades. Mostly winter warfare type training. Back in June of 1965 I participated as a Marine in an amphibious operation some 300 miles north of the Arctic circle near Andoya, Norway. We were returning to the U.S. from a six month Med cruise and were diverted to Norway to see how well troops would fare going from a warm climate to a cold climate exercise. We landed in an area that was wet and marshy, somewhat akin to muskeg. We were in the field about a week and 40% of the Marines came down with trench foot.
Great, do that, with the caveat that Norway has to stop importing hordes of homicidal savages.
Protecting the people of Norway is important for the future of humankind.
Defend yourself Norway.
“Ten thousand Swedes ran through the weeds, chased by one Norwegian. The dust from the weeds, made snoose [sneeze?] for the Swedes, and they called it Copenhagen.”
Huh, no longer operable I guess.

Get your own frikkin marines losers !
I’m of the same mind. Sorry guys, we appreciate the past (lack of) support, but we’re not mercenaries for your border defense. If you want, we can annex you as a US protectorate, but you’ll need to cut us a hefty check for the rest of time.
“Protecting the people of Norway is important for the future of humankind.”
Only to the same extent unlimited welfare is important to the future of ghetto denizens.
You cannot cite a single US interest in Norway. We do very little business with them, and whatever we do would likely continue with whomever runs the place.
You’re wrong.
I can state a critical interest.
Norwegian women.
