SINGAPORE - US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a "comprehensive" document at the end of their summit in Singapore on Tuesday (June 12), as a once unthinkable meeting between foes appears to have yielded progress.
Yet, in what is becoming a signature move from the American president, the specific substance of the deal was left mysterious - awaiting a later reveal at a press conference.
Still, both leaders - who appeared to have developed a rapport over the course of a morning filled with remarkable political theatre - touted the agreement as a significant stride forward.
Mr Kim, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission, said: "Today we had a very historic meeting, overcoming our past history and embarking on a new beginning...the world will see a major change."
Mr Trump, in turn, said a turning point had been reached in the long fraught US-North Korea relationship. "We're both going to do something, and we've developed a very special bond...we're going to take care of a very big and dangerous problem for the rest of the world.
"It worked out far better for both of us than anybody could have expected," he added.
When asked about denuclearisation, he said "we are starting the process very quickly", but did not give any detail.

I believed in a similar vein when Gorbachev “played” Reagan. I was wrong. You may be as well.
Much is being made in the MSM of the similar-sounding docs that NK has signed and ignored in the past.
I think all here recognize the material difference in the current situation. My thinking is that part of keeping the official docs light in commitment right now is because Kim and Trump are dealing with the tricky business of China and China’s grip on NK. Better that NK show their commitment by actions rather than words right now.
Also, of course, after the Obama/Clinton betrayals of Libya, Ukraine, etc.—we do have some showing to do to Kim on the other side as well.
Actually not so. He has released some prisoner/hostages and apparently started the process of disclosure, at least, re: the nukes.
This stuff hasn’t been featured in the NK press previously the way it is now, there hasn’t been an actual “peer” summit, there hasn’t been a commitment of the return of our soldiers’ remains, etc.
Sure, we need to see much more, but the dance with China is the real issue making this such a delicate maneuver — for both Trump and Kim.
Correct.
The difference here is “peace through strength”. Trump’s max pressure and the acquiescence of China is working.
The Max Boot chumps are obsolete. Trump has the strength to get this started and to finish it.
Sanctions are still in place until results. if Kim falters, they go back on and are increased.
Kudos also to Trump moving one of his best men, in Pompeo, into the right position at the right time. If anyone has it, Pompeo has the brainpower and experience to pull this off for Trump, the next level down.
The Sec. of State is traveling next to So. Korea and then to China to work on cementing the progress.
Already whining when you don't know anything about this initial agreement? You are living in the past fecklessness of Obama, W, and Clinton. Pres. Trump has almost accomplished everything he said he was going to to.
POTUS, Secretary of State Pompeo, and National Security Advisor John Bolton have ALL stated numerous times, if KimJungPunk doesn't follow through on verifiable denuclearization, then 300 more sanctions are awaiting if not total annihilation.
You need some more coffee with maybe some rum in it. If you think that Trump is going to be rolled by that little Rocketboy, you haven't been paying attention. With due respect, chill.
This is just the start of a hugely complex historical change in geopolitics. Remember, there is much more going on behind the scenes with high level players in various meetings and have been for some time. This was basically a photo-op. Any signed agreement has yet to be seen and may mean nothing, but will spell out what upcoming agreements would entail.
Please provide a citation that indicates the above in the signed agreement. Thank you.
Here is the agreement. Please show me ONE tangible, concrete action that Kim is taking here. Not things he says he will do in the future, something he is doing today.

“Hey NeverTrumpers, hows that crow tasting right about now?”
even better than that, how about those TDSers? They’re bound to be transitioning from total meltdown into depressions so severe that getting out of bed each morning is a major chore, assuming that they can get out of bed at all ...
But, yes, I agree, a permanent state of war with a rogue nuclear nation is a far better situation than any attempt at peace ...
You’re right; I’m wrong.
Yes, actions speak louder than words.
Gotta like Rodman. Trump is unorthodox. Who’s to say that at least the most recent Rodman visits were not made with Trump’s blessing? Very happy with this. And I want to think that it bodes well for race relations here, also.
I’m not hopeful. Not the end of the world. Just don’t think anything is coming of this - and Trump should just move on.
Thank you.
LOL, they can spew that all they like, but we both know they take the dim view of anything he does.
Screw ‘em.
I agree.
My pleasure. Glad you approve.
