Millennial Myopia
Accuracy in Academia ^ | May 23, 2018 | Malcolm A. Kline

Posted on 06/05/2018 12:45:33 PM PDT by Academiadotorg

When millennials are polled, we see how badly history is taught. We write frequently about the carnage and chaos wrought by communism and socialism because somebody has to.

"The University of Chicago’s GenForward Survey of Americans ages 18 to 34 finds that 62 percent think 'we need a strong government to handle today’s complex economic problems,' with just 35 percent saying 'the free market can handle these problems without government being involved,'" Steve Chapman writes in Reason magazine. "Overall, 49 percent in this group hold a favorable opinion of capitalism—and 45 percent have a positive view of socialism."

"Socialism gets higher marks than capitalism from Hispanics, Asian-Americans, and African-Americans. Sixty-one percent of Democrats take a positive view of socialism—and so do 25 percent of Republicans." We have often argued that the words "capitalism" and "free market" should not be used interchangeably: The latter means what it says while the former is largely a creation of the author of Das Kapital.

In fact, Chapman goes on to make an interesting point that compares the generation that lived through the breakup of the Soviet Union and particularly the Cold War that preceded it with the one that didn't. "Contrast the millennials' opinions with those of their parents," Chapman writes. "A survey last year found that only 26 percent of baby boomers would prefer to live in a socialist country."

"Among young people, the figure was 44 percent."

How much do you want to bet that the 25 percent of Republicans who had a favorable view of socialism all work in Washington, D. C. Hmmm, wonder who they voted for in the primaries....

It doesn’t help that Millennials’ definition of Capitalism is Neoliberalism which conjures up images like outsourcing, H1B visas, and unpaid internships.

They think there is no alternative.

Kids today didn’t invent ignorance, but they might perfect it.

They think socialism comes without oppression.

And if they think a country that is divided along racial and income levels, could ever implement socialism without authoritarian control is an idiot.

Let’s ask how Ukraine liked socialism when the USSR needed more food.

All of this decline in learning has taken place over the past several decades, as so-called "conservatives" have watched while every level of what passes for "education" in America has been taken over by Progressives and the cultish Progressive ideology!

Nothing has been done in secret, but it would have taken individuals with "eyes to see" to realize that when Progressive politicians, Progressive union members, Progressive bureaucracies in every branch of government, state and local, determine the agenda for educating the youth of America, then the learning performance of children was is/was going to suffer!

Add to that the complete abandonment of the age-old understanding of wise human beings that "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom," and you have the result we have in America today.

Odd that these numbers match the statistical distribution Bell Curve of IQ...

It's been my opinion, for some time now, that IQ and political beliefs are closely matched.

I.E., the dumber you are, the more fervently you believe the lies of the Left... And, per Dunning-Kruger, the farther Left you are, the more confident you are, that you are brighter than all those you disagree with...

I have a favorable view of Dead Socialists.

Remember, Hillary said 40% of Democrats are Socialists.

What she failed to mention is that the remaining 60% are full blown Communists.

I read the full column that this article is based on. I’d like to ask Mr. Chapman what we’re supposed to be doing to make capitalism more palatable to Millennials? To me the superiority of capitalism is self-evident. If Millennials cannot or refuse to acknowledge that, then whatever charm offensive we take is likely to go nowhere.

My God, all one has to do is look at the s***hole Venezuela has become. How would the Millennials explain that away?

” prefer to live in a socialist country. Among young people, the figure was 44 percent.”

22.5% of millennials live with their parents.

And, “Free Market” should not be used instead of “Free Enterprise”. Free markets are a component of the Free Enterprise System. The Free Enterprise System is not just about marketing, it is about innovating and producing without being regulated and licensed to death or poverty. And, in order to have “free markets”, all participants need to follow the same rules.

The same way they explain ALL Marxist atrocities: It’s never been successfully tried yet.

Of course, that’s the problem, it if successfully worked, it wouldn’t be Marxism.

That is a form of socialism.

Indeed. What these fools seem to not understand is that more Marxist a government gets, the more authoritarian it gets. That’s the penalty of having a central government plan every aspect of a society, especially economics.

The whole “if only it gets applied the way it was intended” nonsense is just that, nonsense.

I have 5 kids. Let me tell you history is not taught. Its gone in school from grade school through college. You get, white people are bad lessons instead. At the front of our public high school there is a sign prominently displayed in a window beside the front door. It reads:

At this school
LGBT are welcome
Muslims are welcome
women are welcome
Hispanics are welcome
African Americans are welcome
Jews are welcome

My son has pointed out that he is the only one not welcome.

Any survey that offers only 2 approaches: Capitalism and Socialism is an atrocity. All modern societies have a mix of 3 approaches:

Socialism, Capitalism and Corporatism aka Mercantilism which is the arch enemy of Capitalism. Post WWII Corporatism has been on the ascendency at the expense of both Socialism and Capitalism.

Medicare and Medicaid started off as mostly socialism, FFS-Fee For Service. But both R and D found it didn’t work and gradually shifted to Corporatism. The ACA is a big shift toward Corporatism... welfare
big insurance, big hospitals, big pharma, big IT.

Prisons used to be socialist. Increasingly they are moving to Corporatism.

Any survey, any academic, who does not include all three is either grossly ignorant or grossly dishonest.

Re: “The University of Chicago’s GenForward Survey of Americans ages 18 to 34...”

It is essential for all Conservatives to understand that polls of “young Americans” are utterly warped by ethnicity.

New voters turning 18 years of age are 50% white and 50% non-white.

Children vote like their parents - except a little more to the Left.

Young white voters are about 55% Republican. Young non-white voters are about 80% Democrat.

Politically, those numbers are a disaster for Conservatives, because a solid majority of the elderly Americans who die each day are white Republicans.

Please remember these statistics when our Republican national leadership claims it is OK to compromise on Amnesty and on massive legal immigration.
