Europe hit back at the US after President Donald Trump slapped tough tariffs on European steel and aluminium earlier this week.
The united front was delivered from European Union's trade commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom who warned President Trump of retaliation.
However, the unity shown in response to the tariffs could quickly change, according to a leading currency strategist.
Jane Foley, a senior currency strategist at Rabobank, predicted that over time the tariffs will start to hurt and the rest of Europe will blame Germany.
"This could become Germany versus the rest of the EU.
"If you look at the US Treasury report published last month that pinpointed the currency manipulators, they pinpointed Germany and in particular its trade surpluses.
"They advised Germany to increase domestic demand to get rid of its trade surplus. Trump has an issue with all countries that run a trade surplus with the US.
Foley predicted that the tariffs will start to hurt and the rest of Europe will blame Germany Itll be interesting to see if a wedge will be driven between EU economic partners
"That is Germany, that is not France. The issue about tariffs being slapped on the EU creates a problem.
"Will the rest of Europe turn their attention to Germany and say look, Trump has a problem with you and we are suffering the consequences.
"Itll be interesting to see if a wedge will be driven between EU economic partners."

Agree. Tariffs. Pull the plug on NATO.
Make them decide between defense and importing third world welfare leeches.
Not only is it egregious that these countries are already living off our backs, and not paying their fair share for common defense, etc...but then they actively use their wealth to *undermine* us and collude with our enemies!
Note: Merkel plus the Eurocrats have cozied up to Iranians, Chinese, Russians all in efforts to shirk away from Trump’s FAIR and REASONABLE demands.

Not when you look at the FEAR in her eyes!
guaranteed EU, Canada, and Mexico will cry uncle in short order ... these are pipsqueaks trying to win a battle they can’t win against a behemoth like the U.S. ...
Great article. We just signed agreements with Brazil, S. Korea and Australia. The UK decide to side with the filthy Germans...and she is getting pounded in the press and social media.
Put them in Poland...closer to our enemies..Russia and Germany.
From the 1970s ... Gerald Ford ==> WIN = Whip Inflation Now
He lost to Carter and Carter drove the thought that inflation could never be brought under control, it was the new reality, nothing could be done to stop it.
Along comes a fellow named Ronald Reagan who ran for President saying he would get inflation under control. The press, the establishment, the world laughed at him, scoffing at the idea he could do anything to stop inflation.
And for the first years of Reagan’s presidency inflation continued to stay high and the naysayers said to Reagan “see we told you so!” but Reagan said stay the course.
By 1983 Reagan’s economic policy had laid a foundation that would launch an economic revolution
Fast Forward to 2016 and there is this fellow named Donald Trump who runs for President and blasts the establishment with the fact that US National Debt was soaring over 20 trillion dollars and that it must be reigned in and brought under control by among other things revamping trade agreements. The press, the establishment thought him a buffoon at the idea he could do anything to bring the sky-high national debt down especially by reworking trade models.
And here we are on the brink of witnessing the world pay America back for their abuse of trade and the currency markets that go with it. And we can expect to see the national debt shrink in comparison to gross economic measures. With a smaller debt to service, the Treasury will see surpluses, real surpluses not the trickster ones played out in the 1990s when Clinton refi’d the national debt from 30-yrar notes to 5-year notes.
Hw does this scenario impact everyday Americans?
Less taxes, more production, less intrusive government, more freedom.
Shouldnt that word be not, and not now?

This photo meme is grossly insulting. It is a leftist trope implying Merkel is now the leader of the western world.
Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, as each day goes by, Merkel becomes more and more irrelevant.
To be accurate, the captioning should say: “The moment when you realize you are NO LONGER the leader of the western world.”
Germany’s relations with the US might be better if it didn’t insist on supporting crap like open borders, the Iran deal, or the Paris “climate accord”.
Merkel has not been fairminded with Trump. Wouldn’t you agree?
I agree. “Paris Climate.” “Iran Nuke Deal.” “Two state Palestine solution” are all euphemisms for measures designed to “rein in” and undermine U.S. interests, power, influence, and sovereignty. - China, E.U. and Russia seem united around this one cause. Anti-Americanism (due to envy, resentment) is the ideology they can all rally behind.
Be careful, Angela, |
You didnt make a case there to agree with.
Well I can’t with just one article. In terms of my E.U. observations, I can only going off of my own experiences of living in pre-Brexit UK, and spending some time in Greece and Italy. Germany is apparently doing very well but I am happy Trump is sticking up for America. I think trade agreements should be mutually beneficial and not so one sided. Unlike Merkel, I think Iran is awful and should be sanctioned. I also don’t like how cozy Merkel and Macron are willing to be with Putin’s Russia given the situation in Ukraine and Middle East
But the visit got off to a surprisingly warm start, and the body language showed. The two leaders exchanged kisses on the cheek as Merkel emerged from her limousine, and Trump then praised her as "an extraordinary woman" as they sat together in the Oval Office.I agree about Iran, Merkel should spend less time listening to nuclear power UK who sits on the UN Security Council and often boasts of a "Special Relationship with the US"."We actually have had a great relationship right from the beginning but some people didn't understand that," Trump told reporters. "But we understand it, and that's what's important."
