Trump signs 'right-to-try,' allowing gravely ill patients to bypass FDA for experimental treatment

President Donald Trump is slated to sign the controversial "right-to-try" bill on Wednesday, which would bypass drug regulators to give gravely ill patients access to experimental medicines.

The legislation allows patients with life-threatening conditions to ask drugmakers for medicines that have cleared some testing but still haven't been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Previously, people would need to ask the FDA for access to experimental treatments.

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence had been major supporters of passing the measure, which supporters say gives patients hope they would not otherwise have. The House of Representatives approved the bill last week, which is the same version the Senate passed in August.

It allows certain patients to ask drugmakers for medicines that have passed Phase 1 of the FDA approval process but haven't been approved yet and are still undergoing testing. Patients must have exhausted other options and be unable to participate in a clinical trial.

Critics say the legislation undermines the FDA's authority to regulate drugs and could leave patients vulnerable to medicines that might not work or even be harmful. The agency already runs an "expanded access" program where seriously ill patients can apply to access experimental treatments.

Yeah, to a leftie, “caring about the dying” means forcibly euthanizing them so they aren’t a burden to society anymore.

Well, the article says qualifying treatments must have passed some part of the FDA process already, so I doubt this opens the door to any manner of hoax remedies. Probably they must have at least some preliminary approval but just haven’t finished all the required trials yet for final approval.

The Corruptocrats are going to insane about this.
How do they expect to get “donations” from extorting medical research companies if Trump keeps doing stuff like this.

HE IS WRECKING AMERICA!!

[ I read that not ONE Democrat voted for this bill, not ONE..disgusting isn’t it..they claim to be the party that cares about the folks right, just not the dying ones..they cost too much being alive don’t ya know.

They lack compassion? ]

If it was a bill letting doctors provide “end of life options” aka. “involuntary euthanasia” for people under obamacare .... You can bet the farm the Dems would ALL be voting for it....

What I would really like to know is how Jimmy Carter had a miraculous remission of his brain tumor. And now John McCain is still hanging on when his diagnosis sounded like he’d be gone in weeks. Were they able to access treatments that the average person can’t get? Enquiring minds...etc.

Nice to have President who views people, even terminally sick ones, as human beings instead of as financially inconvenient expenses who can harm the medical budget. Take that, obama and your effin’ death panels.

Hopefully this will stop the chemo industry’s lock on cancer medicine.

Good journalism, including mention of an opposing viewpoint.

Wouldn’t it be great if that happened occasionally with Democrat initiatives as well?
>

True. Now, if these ‘journalists’ only dug back further, like, the authority of the FDA to begin (that restricts/tramples the Rights of the patient-2-doctor/Rx)

Some questions come up for me... what kind of treatment is allowed to be tried? if the answer is anything, then, you leave the desperate patient vulnerable to hoaxes out there ( and potentially beneficial cures as well ).

On the other hand, if the principle is LIBERTY ( i.e., Freedom to live and take risks as you see fit ), then this bill is totally compatible and in the spirit of the constitution.
>

Disagree. If the bill had obliterated the FDA, THAT would advanced the principle(s) of Liberty.

Clipping the govt ‘grass’ doesn’t kill the lawn, nor does it STAY cut, unlike pulling it up by the root.

Yeah, isn’t that the whole point? These patients are gravely ill already so they have nothing to lose, to be blunt, and there’s always a chance that one of the experimental medicines WILL work, which would speed up the trial process.
>

Doesn’t seem to ‘save’ the patients from the myriad of APPROVED FDA drugs/procedures/etc. either that were found to be harmful/fatal (just opportunities for the sharks..I mean lawyers).

if women have a ‘right to decide what to do with their own bodies’ in order to ‘save their lives due to ‘dangerous pregnancies’- then why don’t dying patients have a right to try everything possible to try to save their lives?
>

1) Statistically speaking, there are few ‘life threatening’ pregnancies.
2) Why should only the DYING be afforded their Rights to the drugs/procedures/etc. they and their doctors believe best, or even personally wish to give a try?

One might not be dying w/ chronic migraine headaches, but damn if the opportunity should be passed up because GOVT hasn’t approved of XYZ.
