Turkey moves gold to Switzerland – local news

A Swiss news site has said that the Turkish treasury has moved 19 tons of gold to Switzerland from the United States in an attempt to dodge potential sanctions.

BZ Basel said the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, which is officially extraterritorial, with not even Swiss police being able to enter, had taken the shipment from Fort Knox.

The news site speculated that one reason for Turkey removing the reserves from the United States could be fear over possible economic sanctions on the country’s state owned bank Halkbank, which faces a likely fine following revelations that it allowed Iran to undermine U.S.-led economic sanctions.

The news follows reports in the Turkish press suggesting that Turkey was withdrawing its gold reserves from the United States.

The story is incorrect. Fort Knox only contains bullion for the U.S.

It may be that some Swiss Banker made Turkey a “deal”. I think the Nazi’s used Swiss banks too. At the time they sheltered all depositors.

It may be that a large chunk of the Gold belongs to Erdogan the Islamist. He is a huge scale criminal.

One thing occurred to me is that with the gold in Switzerland, it’s much closer to home and it’s also accessible by land. With it being in the US, it depends on air or sea, and if the SHTF, then there will be no accessing it.

The fact that Erdogan does NOT want to keep 19 tons of Turkish gold stored in Turkey is an interesting story by itself.

Yes. But if he is concerned about being removed or killed, he and his backers might not want to loose everything in Turkey. They might have an exist strategy.

As I recall, Texas is one of several states that accepts gold as legal tender - for state taxes and state bills, anyway.

I didn’t know that that situation existed at all.

I hate politics with a passion and try to not get all worked up over it.

However, it just seemed like a common sense kind of thing.

Possession is 9/10’s of the law. If you don’t have it in your possession, you’re taking your chances.

I don’t get why they didn’t have it somewhere closer and safer in the first place.

Yes, the state of Texas does accept gold as payment. I was not aware that other do. It is a point that is of little importance to the average person, but I could see where it might for others. It is not tracked by the banking system. I am curious how they determine the value of bullion gold. Certainly not by weight, without an assay.

It is probably safe in the particular bank in NY. NY has a big port, which could transport the bullion. That is probably risky.
