In a statement on Monday, the Monterey County Sheriffs Office reported a shocking find: a small poppy field on a private plot near a road in Moss Landing, about 15 miles northeast of Monterey, that could produce some four pounds of heroin annually.
Over the weekend the Sheriffs Office Investigations Division eradicated one acre of opium poppies, which contained approximately 27,000 plants of opium poppies and another 16,500 harvested plants, the statement said.
Those plants could have produced a pound and a half of heroin. The plot could have been harvested three times a year.
The street value of a pound and a half of heroin is approximately $45,000, according to the statement.

1 acre is a sprawling field?
Admittedly, that’s more opium poppies than I happen to have, but this is not a huge operation.
Don’t they know these drugs are illegal in California?
Probably just for personal use.
Let’s see now...
Watsonville, CA now 85% hispanic, mostly Mexican, probably 50% illegal.
Salinas, CA...same story.
Gee, whoever could be doing such a thing as producing heroin a few miles from these lovely towns?
No, they were just growing them for Memorial Day. /s
I’m shocked....
They were organically grown.
Scared! Will I be bust by DEA or whoever if I buy a “Poppy” from that 70+yo lady that is front of the our Post Office each Memorial Day weekend? (Come and get me Copper?) :>)
Mexifornia just keeps growing.
Monterey County is not northern Californis.
1000s of acres of these would be blooming behind our home in the Antelope Valley each spring.
It takes 27000 poppies to make 4 pounds? And that’s with three harvestings. How do they make any money on that?
The California Golden Poppy is not an opium producer.
I’ve read that opium poppies were grown in 1880s Kansas but it was so labor intensive the attempt was given up.
I have a ton of these in my garden. I dont think they have that opium ball on them though.
What’s the big deal? Marijuana is good for you. Isn’t that what everyone is saying? Opium poppies are just a plant. But tobacco is bad, evil even. Who would you rather pilot your plane? A dope smoker or a cigarette smoker? Actually I prefer a good cigar.
Isn’t the poppy the California state flower?
California Poppies do have a slight narcotic effect though and a fresh plant tincture of the roots can be used as a mild pain reliever.
