Nor does it include guns that are legally made at home. (Typically made with 80% complete receivers.) Those home “builds” are becoming quite popular. Their ownership is mostly opaque to any would-be tyrants who might covet seizing them.

Mostly opaque? Only in a very few hyper-vigilant cases. Those who buy an 80% on the Internet or who buy in one swoop everything but the receiver will be assumed to have one of those home builds. There is no proof, but close enough. It would be prudent for those who would resist to keep their "official" firearms separate from their home build and face-to-face purchases, with particular care to keep jackboots from locating the less official weapons.

I believe that once it was started, the whole affray would be settled within just a few weeks or months.

Not a chance. The socialists would see their end goal, absolute power, within reach and would double down on their grab for tyranny. I suspect it would take years to reach the end, the battle would encompass all aspects of the social wars and of redistribution/reparations, and the number of casualties would be tens of millions, not mere thousands.

The government took "Unintended Consequences" to heart in a major way, which is why the book is no longer in print. Fortunately, there are copies online that have been scanned and OCRd to make it more widely available. It's not going to be nearly as easy as portrayed to take out random actors without lots of planning, and some luck. Why is it, do you think that there are cameras at virtually every intersection in the country? They are for surveillance to guard against exactly this eventuality.

In the eventuality outlined above, one of the first casualties should be those cameras.
