On a summer morning last year, Fred Schaub drove his Toyota RAV4 into the garage attached to his Florida home and went into the house with the wireless key fob, evidently believing the car was shut off. Twenty-nine hours later, he was found dead, overcome with carbon monoxide that flooded his home while he slept.
After 75 years of driving, my father thought that when he took the key with him when he left the car, the car would be off, said Mr. Schaubs son Doug.
Mr. Schaub is among more than two dozen people killed by carbon monoxide nationwide since 2006 after a keyless-ignition vehicle was inadvertently left running in a garage. Dozens of others have been injured, some left with brain damage.

What type of idiot parks a car with a keyless ignition in a garage?
Are these new cars silent and vibrationless when running?
Was that car inspected?
My BIL worked at GM until his retirement 15 years ago. His comment on emissions control was “We’ve suppressed emissions so much that if you’re going to try and kill yourself by running your car in the garage, you better bring something to read. It’s gonna take a long time.”
Me, too. Darn car is so quiet. Mine starts beeping madly if I walk away with the engine running. I guess it’s lucky I don’t have a garage.
Mine starts beeping to beat the band if I open the door before stopping the engine. It is a little hard to get used to - I just got mine six months ago.
I’m surprised they don’t have a safety time out, something like, if the engine has been on for more than a few minutes without a person sitting in the driver seat to shut itself off.
the real question is, what kind of an idiot forgets to push the big button on the dashboard to turn off their engine? and Who can’t hear that their car is still running?
Our cars are keyless. I have a carbon monoxide detector in our bedroom.
My first thought.
It’s an easy fix.
I don't understand why it is so convenient not to use a key.
Me. I park mine in the garage. And I have to check before I exit once in awhile to make sure Ive hit the off button. My car is so quiet you cant hear it running, especially if the air conditioner is on.
Newer cars are almost silent. Many people, particularly older people do not hear well.
The real question is why are buttons and dials more convenient than using a key?
“the real question is, what kind of an idiot forgets to push the big button on the dashboard to turn off their engine? and Who cant hear that their car is still running?”
Answer: many of the elderly
1. Elderly people are often forgetful as their brains age
2. Elderly people often develop hearing loss AND almost always eyesight problems as they age ...
Some day, if you make it that long, you’ll understand what I’m talking about ...
My car is so quiet you cant hear it running, especially if the radio or air conditioning is on. Ive got to where I check the dashboard before I exit. If its still lit up the car is running.
Or maybe auto-shutoff when the fob is more than ten meters from the steering column? (I picked 10m because that’s already the nominal Bluetooth range...)
That idiot would probably be me. If I am distracted just enough... lets just say its amazing that Ive never burnt down my house, caused a car accident, and have all my fingers and toes.
