I’m surprised they don’t have a safety time out, something like, if the engine has been on for more than a few minutes without a person sitting in the driver seat to shut itself off.

My first thought.
It’s an easy fix.

Or maybe auto-shutoff when the fob is more than ten meters from the steering column? (I picked 10m because that’s already the nominal Bluetooth range...)

The programmer does not possess lots of common sense.
I created software for use by engineers for 25 years and in every program I built in checks to make sure the input was logical. Result was amazing success in using the programs and extremely few input errors. But that takes lot of extra effort.

One of my daughters drives a 2012 Hyundai Sonata and I went out and started it for her one frosty morning. Came back in the house and forgot to take the fob out of my pocket. Shortly thereafter she got in the car and drove to work. Then, I got a phone call from her that afternoon wanting to know if I had her fob - which indeed I did. Had to take it to her so she could start her car and come home 😏....

My F-150 does that, with a prompt that allows you to override the shutdown if you're just parked with the engine running to keep the A/C cool, or something.
