WASHINGTON (AP) -- A White House official dismissed a view expressed by Sen. John McCain about President Donald Trump's CIA nominee, saying Thursday at a staff meeting that "it doesn't matter" because "he's dying anyway," two people in the room told The Associated Press.
Kelly Sadler was discussing McCain's opposition to Trump's pick for CIA director, Gina Haspel, when she made the comment, according to the two people, who described feeling shocked and stunned by the remark. They spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity to discuss the closed-door communications staff meeting.
The White House did not dispute the remark. In a statement, they said, "We respect Senator McCain's service to our nation and he and his family are in our prayers during this difficult time."
The Hill newspaper first reported the comment.
The 81-year-old Arizona Republican, who has spent three decades in the Senate, was diagnosed in July with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer. He left Washington in December and underwent surgery last month for an infection.
Sadler is a special assistant to the president. She did not respond to a request for comment Thursday evening.
McCain's wife, Cindy, responded with a tweet tagged to Sadler, "May I remind you my husband has a family, 7 children and 5 grandchildren."

Met McCain in the summer of 2007 in NH and I turned to my wife and said “he ain’t serious about this, just checking a box”. His campaign was designed to run against Hillary and once Obama started to win, they fell apart. The guy had no desire to attack the black guy.

The remark did not seem offensive. Just some reporter trying to push a story to enflame emtions and turn one identified group of political slant towards another group. Thumbs down for the reporters... Could have let this inoffensive comment fly over.......
John McCain should have resigned his Senate seat the day he was diagnosed with brain cancer, so the governor could appoint a full-time, vigorous alternative who could fight for the interests of Arizona citizens. The taxpayers of Arizona deserve and are paying for a full-time Senator. That’s what they voted for.
Instead, McCain decided to remain a Senator. And so he is still in the arena and is fair game just like every other sitting Senator.
Miami media is running this story today. As if McCain gets to spew vitriol because he is sick.

It’s LITERALLY TRUE that McCain’s views no longer matter. He won’t be voting either for or against Haspel’s nomination. He hasn’t been in Washington since LAST DECEMBER and it’s fairly clear that he’ll never cast another vote in the Senate.
I am beginning to not particularly like Cindy McCain for her “he’s got a family” tweet. May I remind Cindy McCain that the recently arrested California serial rapist/killer has a family! In both cases....SO WHAT!

So - acknowledgement that the guy is on his last feet and no longer reporting to work, and the fact that it makes him irrelevant in current proceedings, is now some sort of nasty comment....
Is it untrue? He is dying, not only that he is dealing with impaired judgement becomes abuse of the location. Any media types who don’t understand that are callous and cruel, not Kelly who was pointing out the obvious.

Two or three days ago it was “Cohen took Russian money”.
That turned out to be a lie. Haven’t seen any corrections as “lead stories” in the news. Fake News is the order of the day. True news is ignored.
