A federal judge on Friday harshly rebuked Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team during a hearing for ex-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort – suggesting they lied about the scope of the investigation, are seeking “unfettered power” and are more interested in bringing down the president. "You don't really care about Mr. Manafort,” U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III told Mueller’s team. “You really care about what information Mr. Manafort can give you to lead you to Mr. Trump and an impeachment, or whatever."

The news reports I've read said the August 2017 scope memo was issued by Rosenstein several days AFTER the Manafort home raid.
Ellis also demanded to see the unredacted “scope memo” congress is trying to get If he decides it is beyond the scope he could dismiss. Just trying to get all the facts before he says anything lets see what he does. Lets see if Rosentein attacks the Judge and tells hin he will not be extored. I would advise Mueller and Rosentein not to change anything in the memo. You can bet there will be a full court press from the DOJ and FBI to find something on the judge and threaten him
This is like a lawyer representing a suspect who was arrested for stealing a car in New York City ... and he's trying to get the charges dismissed because the arrest took place in the 20th Precinct and the arresting officer was assigned to the 30th Precinct.
Manafort's lawyers seem to be making a political argument here, not a legal one.
We shall see....will be interesting.

I’d think it sets up an appeal if convicted already. Seems like a trial at this time is almost a waste of tax dollars and manafort’s money too.

I’ve appeared before Judge Ellis many times since he was appointed decades ago. He has evolved into one of the most frighteningly blunt and independent judges I have ever seen. He will call a spade a spade and let you know exactly what he thinks of your argument in the harshest manner. You would not to want to trifle with any federal judge, but he is last one you would ever do that to.
