The shooting, the family said, was an attempted robbery that unfolded as Shirley Chan and Hong Zheng returned home from work.
It was the fifth time that someone had tried to rob or break into their home since 2015. The family believes they are among a group of Asians who are being targeted because they own restaurants and people think they have money, they said.
...
It was pouring rain on Sunday night when Chan and Zheng pulled into their driveway. There two children, Jade and Eastern, 16, were watching in the house for them to return, a routine they had established after four previous robberies or break-ins, a family friend said.
Chan got out of car first as her husband pulled the car farther up the driveway.
Jades brother, Eastern, said he saw two cars, parked and turned off, with nine or more people. When Chan got out of the car, Jade saw three or four people start approaching her mother.
Eastern grabbed a gun and a magazine of ammunition from inside the house and gave it to his mother.
They shot at my mom at least three times, Jade said. My mom tried to assemble the gun.
The gun jammed, and the attackers were running up to the house, Chan said. She was trying to protect her son and wasnt thinking about her husband who was still parking the car.
They ran away, so my mom ran back and forth trying to get my brother safe, Jade said. And she called my Dad, and he didnt respond back.
Chan went to the car and saw a bullet hole in the window; her husband lay in his seat unresponsive.
He had been shot twice in the face and once his neck, Jade said.

Don’t see that at all in the post. Just reasonable observations.
“Good lord, are you accusing the kids?”
Shooting someone in the face multiple times tells me the perps were known and it was personal. I’m calling ENVY as the motive.
It was in North Carolina.
Blame the anti-gun propaganda for the family not having reddily available protection.
I have seen many messages that the only way to keep guns in the home is unloaded and locked up.
After what they had been through previously...
1. Lots of firearm training & practice.
2. Drive separate vehicles and arrive at work/home at different times (even by 5 minutes to allow the 1st to get inside and be armed and on the lookout for the 2nd arrival).
Say's a lot about our society where this happens to "average" folks who simply own a local restaurant. What a tragedy.
restaurant was on MLK drive?
“My insight is they were likely behaving like typical North Carolina high school sophomores and not necessarily living in Code Red status.”
After you’ve been robbed that many times you should be at DEFCON 1. Or moving.
Proofreading! Whats that!

One of my wife’s friends owns a Chinese restaurant.
After paying staff, insurance , taxes, fees licenses, purchasing inventory and supplies, I think they clear about as much as an engineer with 5 or 6 years experience.
Not a lot for the cash investment to have a business and all the long hours and headaches it has.

Dreadful. RIP.
Oh my goodness...at first I thought it was the wife and children that were killed. I’m sorry they lost there father and husband. And, in Durham too.
Here in northern Virginia, we had a time when Asians and Indians were getting robbed for their, supposed stashes of gold and cash. The ones who were caught were either blacks from DC or local illegal alien gangbangers. While it still happens, it’s pretty rare now.
“Had to be other Asians.”
In Durham, NC? Not bloody likely.

The wife was not assembling the gun. It was not disassembled, it was not loaded and she was trying to load a magazine. Big difference, but the big problem is why they bought guns but did not have them loaded and ready to use?
A gun is of no use if it is in a drawer and not loaded, as those poor people have now learned.

I’ll bet there are a lot more Asians in Durham than you think——NC has many-—in the last 10 years.
.
Durham is 5.3% Asian, 37.9% black. Asians are among the most law-abiding groups in the US. I’d bet the rent it was not Asians.
