I know from an engineering standpoint these planes can fly on one engine but I also know if I were on a passenger and saw a blown up engine on the port side I wouldn’t want to continue to test my belief in that engineering.
Absolutely amazing outcome.

You are right, of course, on both counts.

The quite unusual noises, oxygen mask deployment, descent, obvious loss of one engine, obvious passenger injuries at least one of which was grotesque, behavior of cabin attendants, etc., would elevate one's heart rate.

The pilot/flight crew, receiving reports from the cabin crew almost certainly endured the entire scenario concerned about the possible imminent loss of controls.

Where did the ATC behave like idiots? I listened to the recording and it sounded like everyone was professional.

I don’t think there is any bigotry because she is a female. We all admired Sully’s coolness and “right stuff” under pressure too.

A bit OT, but related. Southwest Airlines has not released the name of the pilot, but she was quickly identified by passengers and social media. The the press IMMEDIATELY found a college classmate, Cindy Foster:

Cindy Foster, who went to college with her, told the Kansas City Star that Shults was also among the first women to fly an F/A-18 Hornet for the Navy. Foster told the Kansas City Star that Shults knew she “had to work harder than everyone else. She did it for herself and all women fighting for a chance.” Foster said.
So, how is it that the same press could not find a single classmate or student of Barry Hussein Soetoro in 9 or 10 YEARS?

ATC did really well, very professional. I don’t know where you’re getting that from?

I believe they test the theory in test rides by shutting down 1 engine in flight to make sure the remaining engine can sustain flight. BUT, in this case of a totally mangled nacelle changing the airflow and flight characteristics of the wing and the control surfaces, I doubt this plane handled the same as it would had an engine just been shut down but no change to its physical aerodynamics. Pilot did a fantastic job.

Last thought: This FR article should be disseminated far and wide to show what us men truly think of such an extraordinary women. She should be the role model for all girls/women and not some Karcrapian or other trampy celebrity. It would be an honor just to shake her hand. I wouldn’t walk across the street to say hello to Cher.

Well, you have two choices:

1. He didn’t really go to school where he said he did.

or

2. Nobody wants to admit they knew him.

Take your pick.

Impressive story as it is but don’t forget to also thank God and Boeing too.

SouthWest has a long history of heavily recruiting former military pilots. Many years ago, other airlines judged whether or not an airport needed to be shut down for weather based on if SouthWest was still flying in. It also says something that this is the first fatality for SouthWest.

>>I read a discussion the other day about airline pilots don’t really have to do real flying these days.

It’s true. They don’t really do any real flying...until they have to do real flying and then there’s just no black box substitute for the sack of meat in the left seat. Unfortunately, the switch from no real flying to real flying occurs in the air where gravity and physics wants you dead.

No, Hollywood will certainly want Meryl Streep in the role or possibly Tom Hanks in drag.

her service photo has some really, really long hair.

Good for her though, I’m glad she was around. This is why vets are simply better people.

I was wondering if they do that kind of emergency gotchas in simulators during training. Depending on location of the hole in the fuselage, it would have differing affects on the aerodynamics. Afore wing would be completely different than aft wing. Am I wrong?

I don’t believe women should be in combat roles in the military.

I detest the people who are making that happen, but it is important to me to state that I do not IN ANY WAY extend that sentiment to women who are in those roles currently.

If I were in their shoes, I would try to go into any role I had the desire to go into, if the rules let me. Nothing but respect there.

I simply don’t think they should be there, and it has nothing to do with disrespect towards women. Far from it. My contempt is directed towards policy makers.

I read a discussion the other day about airline pilots don’t really have to do real flying these days. With all the technology people say it doesn’t take a real pilot any more and standards for pilots could be lowered, specifically lowering the level of experience required to be hired.

...

That’s pretty much the model for Airbus and airlines outside the US (the Air France jumbo that crashed in the Atlantic a few years ago is a perfect example). I think American carriers still prefer military pilots and other real pilots who know how to fly.

Pilots who drink are referred to a professional rehab program with 5 yr monitoring. Their recovery rate after that 98%.
Like doctors who have to go through specialized monitoring to get their license back, recovery rate very high for many years. The rehab and monitoring is exhaustive.

I would be MORE comfortable with flying with pilot who has gone thru this, than someone I have no idea if they have drinking problem.
