R. Lee Ermey died according to a tweet from Donald Trump Jr.
Everyone hopes he got the duty station of choice.
Yup,it certainly came damn close to what I experienced at Ft Knox in '69.
Warren Oates played Sgt Hulka. Oates was a very good actor too. He was in The Wild Bunch and was nominated for an Academy Award for Two Lane Blacktop. He made many good films in the 1960s and 1970s.
“He showed the world a REAL DI.”
I remember hearing him say something to the effect of, “I can teach you anything if I’m allowed to put my hands on you.”
Sometimes people ask “what was boot-camp like?” I tell them to watch the first part of “Full Metal Jacket” - that is exactly what it was like, down to the uniforms, squad bay, weapons, etc. I was a football player and had never run 3 miles in my life, and I barely beat the maximum run time on the introductory PFT. I got knocked across the squad bay twice, averaged 3 hours sleep each night during the first two weeks and I lost 30 lbs in 10 weeks. By the end I was a lean mean green (amphibious) fighting machine.
It was in Okinawa, according to a 1997 "Entertainment Weekly" article:
I stumbled into show business when the Vietnam films were starting, says the Kansas native, who was studying drama in Manila when Coppola came to town. After medical retirement from the Corps, I didnt know what to do, so I bought a run-down bar and whorehouse in Okinawa. As Ermey tells it, GIs got honorary memberships for helping him renovate, but I was doing a little black-marketing and the Okinawan FBI was hot on my trail, so I boogied on out to the Philippines. There he met Nila, his wife of 21 years.
Never shy or retiring, Ermey thinks of those as the not-so-bad old days. I feel sorry for the kids today, he volunteers. They cant have fun like we could. The worst thing we had to worry about was the clap. Today, you die. It just isnt fair.

RIP Gunny. Semper fi fellow Marine. I enjoyed your movies.
You made a perfect Marine drill instructor.
Ditto. Always admired his performances and his personal courage in confronting the Obama Administration and Hollywood.
Yes, he was outstanding and will be missed.
God rest his soul. I will never forget my DI’s.

Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia and The Cockfighter are classics.
He also played Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman in the Steve Prefontaine movie.
LOL. Absolute classic.
The yard scene from “The Watch”. We’ll miss you Gunny.

I'll admit that watching Full Metal Jacket made me think that P.I. meant, at that time, Pussy Island.
I am glad joined the Marines (Truman was still President) when P.I. was truly brutal and important...
IAC, Semper Fi, Gunny...RIP
Bears repeating.
He made that film the cult classic it is today.
