What is the first thing you think of when you think of an alien movie? Does Sigourney Weaver's bald head pop into your mind as you picture her battling extraterrestrials in Alien 3? Or do you think of something unconventional, like Cloverfield or District 9? The alien genre is one that has certainly evolved over the years as special effects and computer-generated images have improved far beyond anyone's wildest dreams. But the fact of the matter is that for an alien movie to be good (actually, for any movie to be good), it has to tell a really good story, have character development, and be entertaining. Even the most beautiful film can be terrible if you just don't care about the people (or aliens) that you're watching.
Here are my picks for the best alien moviesfor various reasonsdating back to 1982. I don't believe that older necessarily means better, but I also don't believe that higher budget means better either. See what you think.

Independence Day.
Fire in the sky.
The Thing From Another World , 1951. The movie that gave my late grandmother the hives!
Looking at it now I miss how optimistic the early 50s were. We’ve got spaceship frozen in ice, we’ll melt that sucker out with thermite bombs. No problem.
Read that one, a good short story.
My wife and I watch it once a year. I still don’t like to watch it alone. When I saw it on tv when I was about 10 it scared the living crap out of me. It may be the best scifi movie of the 50s and in the all time top ten.
I thought The Last Starfighter and Evolution were pretty weird but interesting alien movies.
I like the theory that they are demons, not aliens.
That’s why the first reports of what worked against them were holy water in churches, and it is why the little angel girl’s blessed water worked when other things likely didn’t.
Aliens that can’t stand water in all forms are literally stupid to come to a planet where it covers most of the surface and is a component of the atmosphere.
Demons erupting worldwide now that most of the population doesn’t know about them is plausible, well, as much as that concept could be.
By Phillip K. Dick, I believe.
The Last Starfighter
Yeah, had nightmares about getting that thing drilled into the back of my head............
Really? I wouldn't be surprised, but I read that story back in the very early 90s, so I just can't recall.
The first Alien by far, The Thing, War of the World’s, Instellar, Starman,
Men in black was stupid and very poor sci fi.
Steve McQueen's last great movie before his career collapsed.
It was just such an original twist on the standard alien invasion story.
“but the visuals are fantastic!”
THEY CERTAINLY ARE! I HAVE WATCHED JUST TO SEE THE BACKGROUNDS. EXPERTLY DONE!
What I liked about ‘Outland’ was it was realistic. Yeah they were in space, but people bitched about their jobs, their were corporate dicks and so on in other words people were people same with ‘Aliens’, ‘They Live’ and ‘Falling Skys’.
