US President Donald Trump has tweeted that Russia should "get ready" for missiles to be fired at its ally Syria, in response to an alleged chemical attack near Damascus on Saturday.
"Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!'" Mr Trump said in his tweet.
Senior Russian figures have threatened to meet any US strikes with a response.
President Bashar al-Assad's government denies mounting a chemical attack on the rebel-held town of Douma.
In one his tweets on Wednesday, Mr Trump called the Syrian leader a "gas killing animal".
In another, he painted a dark picture of US-Russia relations but said it did not have to be that way.
The US, UK and France have agreed to work together and are believed to be preparing for a military strike in response to the alleged chemical attack at the weekend.

True but how do oppressed slaves in a totalitarian nation do that? Like Germany and Japan before WW2?? It took intervention.
I call war with Syria a mistake for all the reasons our previous blunders in the region were. The Campaign Trump had this right; hopefully he has cooled off and thought this through. It appears he has.
Did you think about it?
I think he’s got a good point. And if you stop attacking and THINK you should be able to figure it out. I could give you some clues but you shouldn’t need them.
You couldn't lead a pack of boy scouts on an Easter egg hunt. Please, drop the war pom pom, scrape the blood off your hands and show this forum evidence that this attack came from Assad.
Yet another squeaking war hawk sans Assad evidence? Thank god you folks were read out of the Republican party on 11/8/16.
OK, so you support and foreign country’s invasion of America because
1) 20,000 babies are being slaughtered every day, and/or
2) we are a nation of infidels who Islamic Iran declares deserves death.
I happen to disagree, but only in the sense of punishing the current regime severely and making it clear to others that neither the Russians nor the Iranians acting together can prevent us from doing so.
That's an important aspect of this situation that should be apparent.
Don’t get stupid.
Where did I say I support a foreign countries invasion??
Quote a post, in context.
Answer.
“but you havent rebutted any of my specific claims.”
Seems he defaults to ad hominem fallacy instead. Did it with me too.
I’m not so sure this wasn’t a false flag event designed to rise tensions between super powers.
When one screeches for war, without evidence, some bumps and bruises should be expected. The interwebs aren’t for the the faint of heart but feel free to find a safer space, especially given your peculiar predispositions.
Do you honestly believe a totalitarian state that violates the sovereignty of it’s citizens with deliberate rape, torture, starvation, and death has a moral right to claim state sovereignty?
Answer, without equivocation. Yes or no.
Yes! please tell the forum how a longer war in Vietnam would have been in America's interests.
Be specific.
“When one screeches for war,”
Another ad hominem personal attack based firmly on a hallucination on your part. Quote a post where I did that. Good luck!
Do you notice a difference between North and South Korea?
If you can notice the difference, think about why there is a difference.
Let’s see where this all leads. In our exchange yesterday I mentioned that Trump might surprise us and now with Mattis wavering perhaps I was right. I sure hope so.
Again, be specific.
Thanks.
LOL!
That means any effective strike would be much harder.
But I also think that Trump's tweets will make very difficult for him to do nothing.
Constantly threatening to do something and then making the enemy scramble and wait is a good way to degrade his forces and record his preparations and order of battle.
