The FBI raided the offices of President Trump's personal attorney Michael Cohen on Monday.
The raid came after federal prosecutors in New York City obtained a search warrant following a referral from special counsel Robert Mueller, Cohen's lawyer told the New York Times. Mueller is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, and related issues.
NBC News confirmed news of the raid.
The Times reported that FBI agents seized records relating to several issues, including a $130,000 payment Cohen has said he made to porn star Stormy Daniels.
Daniels has said that money was given to her in exchange for her agreement to keep quiet about an affair she had with Trump that began in 2006. The White House has denied that Trump had sex with Daniels, and Trump has said he was unaware of the deal Cohen made with her.
In addition to records related to Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, FBI agents also seized emails, tax documents and business records, according to the Times, which cited a person briefed on the search.
Cohen is an executive vice president and general counsel of the Trump Organization.
It was not immediately clear where the raid occurred. Vanity Fair reported that FBI agents on Monday visited a room at the Lowes Regency Hotel in Manhattan, where Cohen has been staying and executed the warrants.
Cohen's lawyer, Stephen Ryan, said, "Today the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York executed a series of search warrants and seized the privileged communications between my client, Michael Cohen, and his clients. I have been advised by federal prosecutors that the New York action is, in part, a referral by the Office of Special Counsel, Robert Mueller."
"The decision by the U.S. Attorney's Office in New York to conduct their investigation using search warrants is completely inappropriate and unnecessary," Ryan said.
"It resulted in the unnecessary seizure of protected attorney client communications between a lawyer and his clients. These government tactics are also wrong because Mr. Cohen has cooperated completely with all government entities, including providing thousands of non-privileged documents to the Congress and sitting for depositions under oath."
Trump's spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told CNBC that the White House has no comment on the raid.
Spokesmen for the FBI's New York field office and for Mueller did not immediately respond to CNBC's requests for comment.
“Mueller is absolutely trying to provoke Trump to fire him.”
Trump should not only fire Mueller, he should set up an American-style Nuremberg military tribunal to drag the deep state traitors before the bench. If Trump leaves it to the unorganized militia to take down the deep state traitors, it will take some time and be very bloody. An American-style Nuremberg tribunal is better.
Trump had better start working on how to defend himself. With the GOP working overtime to dump the election, he will be fighting impeachment by next February
The OIG report must be close if Mueller and rosenstein are trying this hard to get fired.
Its official this is a vendetta. Muellers boyfriend Comey gets fired and he goes on a vendetta.
The problem with Rosenxxxx is who can move up or in to take his place - who is not just another deep stat-er? The problem with dumping Sessions is that the Senate will never give Trump anyone, except perhaps Mueller.
The appointment of Sessions to the post of AG will go down as one of Trump's greatest blunders... I was a big fan of Sessions, and then he recused himself (from just about everything) and I saw storm clouds gathering... then Rosenxxxx stepped up and in 30 seconds appointed a SC and I knew the storm was going to become a typhoon.
There is just no place in D.C. for an honest patriot... The civil war is starting! ... because the Left is demanding it - and the Left always gets what it wants. Which means the people never do.
you may phone the United States Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121. A switchboard operator will connect you directly with the Senate office you request.
DING! WINNER!
If I remember correctly, Cohen is a liberal. I wonder if today he is still a liberal.
I never suggested Cohen would flip; just that Mueller’s actions are designed for that purpose.
Mueller is BANKRUPTING everyone in Trumps circle!!>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Thats the way liberal fascists work. Its time both Mueller and Rosenstein were fired.
DOH!
Thanks
Who is going to vote for someone with the face and the personality of a mortician other than the hate Trump crowd?
Los Angeles is planning a pro-Trump/anti tyranny rally. I wonder if other places are mobilizing, too.
My point, which you obviously missed or ignored, is that Trump should have fired a few people by now and made an example out of them. Trump can fire anyone who serves at the pleasure of the President. (You might want to look up a couple of facts about that.) He can also see to it that other uncooperative employees are reassigned to areas where they can no longer impede or thwart the president’s agenda.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re talking about private or public sectors, managers cannot tolerate insubordination or subversion of the agenda and work they were hired to do. Would you allow a subordinate to derail your career?
It may take a little while to clean house but its imperative to start the process of removing a couple of the key obstructors, which is best done as early in an executive’s tenure as possible.
I get it, you want Trump to fire everyone. However, I trust Trump decisions. Not people barking from the sidelines like you.
I get it

No, you don’t get it at all. You just read whatever you want into my comments.
Not trolling. I’m reminding conservatives that the rule of law applies to all of us. If that’s upsetting, I’m sorry. It’s a fundamental thing. Granted it should have brought down the Clintons more than once. Why, then, some conservatives went off the deepen end for one of the Clinton defenders and one of the Clinton funders is just fodder for a case study in social psychology.
Ken H, you’re right. Let’s not be loyal to our values and the laws of the nation. Let’s applaud an administration that is in turmoil everyday with firings and weird tweets undermining those employed in the Executive Branch. We’ll be loyal for the sake of the President’s vanity and his lack dismal lack of experience in politics. Let’s put loyalty to Trump, the Clinton-funding and Clinton-defending fellow Trump who insisted on the Clintons being at his third wedding to his stripper wife, above the conservatives who worked their whole lives to achieve a conservative victory of the White House and both legislative branches. It was a victory soured by Trump’s need to berate all and anyone not in servile obeisance to him. Let’s pretend that a man who pays off porn stars is an exemplar of conservative values, the family values wing of the conservative movement. Let’s pretend character doesn’t matter as much as loyalty to Trump. Let’s not undermine him when he attempts to undermine conservative institutions and when he maligns the CIA or the FBI. After all, they’re the deep state, as the Left has said for forty years.
You sound like those Israelites that got left behind and wilderness bound... not allowed to enter the ‘Promise Land’... All you got is murmuring ... murmuring... You have spat upon and ridiculed Trump from the get go... I will take Trump’s character over your lack of character any day of the week... He has at least accomplished something ... you, not one thing, but a chronic murmurer...
