Thousands of Oklahoma teachers walked out of school Monday and protested at the state capitol for higher salaries and increased funding.
Oklahoma legislators approved a $6,100 raise for state teachers across the board in an attempt to evade the walk-out, but teachers proceeded with the protest, NBC News reported.
My niece sits on the floor in her middle school English class in Moore, Oklahoma, because theyre overloaded into the class and dont have enough furniture, Edmond Public Schools elementary teacher Carrie Akins told The Daily Caller News Foundation.
My son in ninth grade had to get an override on his schedule because his Spanish class was too full
he was student number 41 in the class. As a state, we have failed them.

Guilty conscience?...nah,I doubt it.
Almost... but for almost every college campus in America, the School with the lowest average GPAs and SATs for incoming freshmen is not the School of Education... it's the School of Journalism. The School of Education is usually tied with the School of Arts for second-worst. Those seeking secondary degrees are usually those who are looking to go into administration in the future. Educating children is not their life's focus.
“Nightmare urban school” is why my daughter quit.
And the federal govn’t tries to get teachers in those type of schools by paying of their college tuition.
“Pencil and paper are cheaper ——”
Sure, but kids today need the computer training————virtually everything they do will be on-line.
.
The teachers need to look to their “school administrators”. They are where all the school money is wasted. Too many of them, too high salaries, and incompetent leadership. Way too much fat in school administration.
Then the teacher’s union needs to disappear. That is a major source of problems in public education. Unions have no place in the public sector.
And lastly, there are too many FedGov and state “programs” that they have to be in compliance of, that have absolutely nothing to do with teaching children.
BINGO on post #5. Too many in classrooms, especially in Spanish —> unrestricted immigration, not just because OK can’t spend enough on the schools!
But their dissatisfaction with anything - with everything - is always manifested in demands for more money and more of the stuff that money can buy.
Today they whine that the classrooms are overcrowded.
Tomorrow they will be demonstrating for open borders and amnesty, never seeing (or admitting to) a relationship between the two.
In the minds of liberals classrooms are only crowded because of stingy republicans who hate children.
agree. I studied Education - it was super easy !!!!
Methods of teaching math, methods of teaching social studies, methods of teaching language arts.
the Department of Redundancy Department !
I could have taught K-8 with high school diploma
‘I DO appreciate what teachers go through these days.’
I appreciate their issues with students who disrupt the classrooms; these monsters have ruined, and continue to do so, the educational possibilities for generations...other than that, which is admittedly huge, it is a job to die for...
My daughter's first job as an RN was a per-diem position for a school district. She had one assignment where she was assigned to a severely disabled student who required 24/7 medical care/supervision. A full time personal RN so he could go to public school! And none DARE speak of it.
They are only working August through May. Part time work=part time pay!
In Michigan you could fill 100 teaching jobs in a week, even those 6th grade + jobs.
Michigan is about the highest paid teachers in America, and when you factor in COL they likely are the highest paid.
Many are getting 100k+ for their part-time job.
Upside down pyramid pensions and best benes around are unsustainable.
There has to be some middle ground, but then again, liberals are irrational and poor in math.
May we should move there and become teachers!..................
In the class room, pencil and paper is fine. They don’t need a computer provided by school districts to get their homework assignments.
They need to have the ability to write as well as know how to poke keys on a keyboard but writing is more important. Computers and networks crash all the time, pencil and paper don’t.
Computer skills are probably already being taught at home or in the class room. My two grandsons have computer classes starting in the 1st grade.
Most of the kids I see have cell phones anyway, why do they need a laptop provided by tax payers, as well.
My grandson’s parents had to get him a cell phone to get his homework assignments on, can’t the school just contact the parent?
went to school in chicago 43 to 56 most classrooms had 48 seats kids learned teachers had control
THAT'S OUR ARGUMENT!
But they will keep voting for more and more government....
I thought The State was so good? Isn't that what they are teaching these kids? I hope the kids are learning a REAL lesson from this.
There are some legitimate reasons for teachers to walk out.
For example, the teachers at Anacostia High School in DC have walked out today.
The toilets there don’t work, and the teachers have to send students who need to use one to a middle school two blocks away.
I know, DC school are a huge pool of waste, but this walkout seems reasonable.
