President Trump has instructed military leaders to prepare to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria, but has not set a date for them to do so, according to a senior administration official.
In a meeting with top national security officials Tuesday, Trump stressed that U.S. troops can be involved in current training tasks for local forces to ensure security in areas liberated from the Islamic State, the official said.
But the president said that the U.S. mission would not extend beyond the destruction of the Islamic State, and that he expects other countries, particularly wealthy Arab states in the region, to pick up the task of paying for reconstruction of stabilized areas, including sending their own troops, if necessary.

Good! I think. The trouble with this conflict is that I’m not sure there are ANY good guys.
John McCain is going to die of a heart attack today.
So what happened to never telling your opponent your plan or else they will just wait you out?
The exodus of another Vietnam. All for it.
And this will solve what for us? I thought Mattis was the kick-ass commander. isis on the run, and all that shi’ite.
Though leave the Kurds hung out to dry.
“Around and around we go. Where we stop, nobody knows.”
Abandoning the field before the fight is done, has become a theme of this country.
Assad to “gas his own people” for no reason under odd circumstances in 3 ... 2 ...1 ...
Adios!
ISIS’ ass has been thoroughly kicked. However, taking a side in a country’s never-ending civil war is something that has been a theme for this country in the past. That theme ends with President Trump.
A vacuum is quickly refilled. We lose. Gum-by.
Good.
If we had a Bush Republican in office rather than Trump, instead of this sensible strategy we'd have ground troops in Syria for the next decade and would waste about a trillion dollars on a misguided nation-building scheme.
Bolton is going to try every trick up his sleave (including the use of fake intelligence) to get Trump to change his mind.
Agreed. We need a full on War effort, including a Draft and dedicated War Tax to pay for it until the War is won.
Articles already coming in that Trump has “reluctantly” agreed to keep on in Syria after all.
After meeting with National Security Council, that is.
I just saw that and am disappointed. Trump should listen to his gut instincts, not to his advisors. His first reaction on most issues - immigration, foreign policy, trade, etc. is often the correct one. Then advisors start whispering in his ear and he takes a position that's friendlier to the political establishment. I just hope his advisors don't similarly convince him to back down on putting the National Guard up to guard the US-Mexico border until a suitable barrier is in place.

trump’s opponent was ISIS and it’s been destroyed. what’s in Syria now is a civil war. Trump’s doing EXACTLY what he said he was going to do during the campaign: destroy ISIS and get the hell out of the “nation building” business.
There’s no way we should be involved in a Syrian civil war that will go on forever, not to mention there aren’t any obvious good-guys to side with, and even if there are, it’s none of our business - just another arab/muslim shithole in which the best outcome for stability would be for Assad to to win his civil war.
ISIS has been crushed and we should get the hell out. If ISIS manages to regenerate in a few years, THEN go back and crush them again.
to pay for it until the War is won.
Which war is that?
Why are we in Syria again?
