Auburn High School Proudly Adopts ‘Africentric Math’ To Draw Black Students Into STEM Fields

A Canadian high school switched to “Africentric Math” to attract black students to go into Science, Technology, Engineering and Math(STEM) fields, according to Canadian Broadcasting’s(CBC) Wednesday report.

Nova Scotia’s Auburn Drive High School math teachers are skipping their previous eurocentric approach to teaching mathematics so black students will gain more interest in the subject, the CBC reported. Teachers are adopting an Afrocentric lens to teach mathematics, based on incorporating African history and culture to make math classes resonate with their students.

Auburn High School is working with the Imphop’s Legacy Academy, a program encouraging black students to get interested in STEM, to craft their new curriculum. One example of the new approach is using Egyptian pyramids to explain trigonometry.

“It’s academic math, but we want to build their self-confidence, their self-awareness so they can feel that they’re capable of doing the math,” Auburn Drive High School Principal Karen Hudson said.

Temple University’s African Studies Chair Molefi Asante originally designed the Afrocentric movement in a book, “Afrocentricity: The Theory of Social Change,” published in 1980. He criticized the “Eurocentric” focus of education and instead encouraged academics to make lessons more relatable to African students. One example is teaching biology based on black biologist Ernest Just’s research over someone white, according to The American Prospect.

There are already 23 students who signed up to take the Afrocentric math class starting September 2018.

Math is its own language.

When I worked in the hinterlands of China in the mid 70s, my interpreter couldn't translate a lick of technical jargon. So I spoke to my Chinese counterpart (who didn't speak English) in technical and chemical equations. It worked perfectly. It wasn't White-Centric Math or Chinese-Centric Chemistry or Anglo Centric Combustion. It was just the fundamental truths of the universe in elegant common language. We would write equations on a pad, pass them back and forth, and agree or disagree, nodding and occasionally laughing. Worked beautifully.

Are these idiots somehow going to destroy that?

Good grief.

Math is math.

How about leaving politics, race, and gender equality out of it and just teach the facts.

Maybe they should watch *Hidden Figures*.

Fantastic movie about black women and the STEM fields.

Reverse racism is so goshdamn rampant today.

Africentric? Are you frakin’ kidding me? White people had done this sh*t via the creation of caucasian centric math, these mofos would all be up in arms crying racism, like wtf!?!!

How RACIST is this?

Because they are “BLACK”, they can’t learn math? HUH?

Are these nitwits calling Black people STUPID? It sure sounds like it to me.

Maybe if your crappy public schools and your crappy public school teachers had taught them BASIC math, they could do this math.

Evidently things progress. What’s
wrong with the math everyone else
is learning? I realize that teachers
are trying to spark the student’s
interest, but these methods tend to
separate races. Black and white math.
This, of course is just my humble
opinion.

Well, the pyramids are in fact in Africa, but they were not built by blacks. Maybe they should call it Arabcentric math.

Many black slave were needed to raise the pyramids. Just saying.

The great beauty of mathematics is its lack of subjectivity. Follow the rules and you get the correct answer. I am truly blessed, I love being a mathematician. Linear algebra can be taught in many different ways, if you are into differential geometry then you will teach it in a different manner than someone who likes abstract algebra. Both subject-centric teaching methods are just as valid. Race has no place in mathematics.

It’s not about inability. It’s about lack of interest. Students and not just Black ones often don’t care about math, so they don’t go into fields that require math and pay high salaries.

Afrocentric Math

Exam question:

It takes 10 feet of rope to lynch 1 White South African farmer.

The Black ANC African National Congress wants 5 evil privileged White folks lynched each week.

In 4 weeks, how many Whites can be hanging from a tree by Communist Blacks??

Not a mathematician here but a heavy background in it (PhD Engineering & Applied Physics). Wholeheartedly agree with you, the sad thing is this kind of stuff makes racists look correct.

This sort of thing can easily backfire. Students in a Georgia school got asked these questions.

I suspect the lesson was intended to be anti-racist in someway, but parents objected to it as racist.
