Russian officials say a state of emergency will be declared in the town of Volokolamsk, north-west of Moscow, where thousands have protested over toxic fumes from a landfill site.
Hydrogen sulphide in the town's air was at least 10 times above the permitted level on Thursday, although locals said it was far worse than that.
There are plans to evacuate mothers with infants to health facilities.

Phew
Is it possible to flare off the gas?
I would think so. Here in the U.S. we punch wells down into the landfill and pump the contaminated air to filter and such. Some places use it to run generators. But just a flare would at least get rid of the contaminated air. I imagine there are residues that might not be so great, but nothing like the hydrogen sulphide. Although I’m not sure how affects the body. I know if it gets too high it can kill you quickly - I think it replaces the O2 in your lungs so you sufficate? On oil rigs they have the H2S alarm.
What is it with the Russians?
They always seem to be effing themselves up in some way.
the birds don’t seem to mind.
Same with the Chinese. It’s part of the many fruits of communism.
More than likely. If theres that much its gotta have enough methane to burn, even if it didnt though you could run it through and engine with supplemental fuel.
Get this, at a old closed landfill in [undisclosed N. CA location] it was just pumping out of monitoring wells there. Engineer tells me they could run the whole facility off 4 cyl generators digesting it but Air Resources Board says no, it might emit some NOx...
What did they put into the borscht?
Seriously, they could have another Bhopal and I would not expect the Russian press to portray it as more than a mild inconvenience.
Sad story; hope they can resolve it. Perhaps the US can help; would help with the relationship with Russia.
I work in h2s environments. That stuff is extremely nasty and can kill you right quick. Even a small dose if it knocks you down, can leave you with permanent damage.
The site at the link compiles a daily collection of events likely attributable to hydrogen sulfide in the environment. His "Skully" comics inject a little humor.
I had a union friend get ‘caught’ in H2S leak at refinery when he tore off his oxygen mask because no air was coming to his mask (someone stepped on hose) and ran out of danger. The Sulfur went right to his brain and lost memory about the whole day and he couldn’t remember enough facts to report it.
He was real lucky. I’d be tearing anyone a new hole for stepping on an air hose.
Neurotoxic with paralysis of breathing, pulmonary edema as life threatening symptoms.
