In every way, Rusty Staub, the beloved Mets' hitting icon, who passed away early Thursday morning at age 73, was bigger than life a bigger-than-life baseball personality, humanitarian, gourmet chef, wine connoisseur, friend-to-all and, to the fans of Montreal, quite simply, "Le Grand Orange."

Staub died at 12:30 a.m. Thursday at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Palm Beach, Florida, due to multiple organ failure. He was initially admitted with pneumonia, dehydration and an infection and had spent the last eight weeks in the hospital. He would have turned 74 on Sunday.

Great memory, the bird was something to behold.
Former Tiger ping
What a man! Loved watching him play in his lunch-bucket, workmanlike manner. Great hitter, great right-fielder w/ a cannon arm. Couldn’t run a lick, but made the rest of the game look easy, which it isn’t.
Thanks for “cleaning my room” Ma. I had at least three of his cards from the late 60’s.
Hey, basalt! I was also there, also in center field bleachers!
I was going to trade you a ‘74 Cleon Jones for one of them. Your loss.
RIP
I remember watching Rusty when he played for the Durham (NC)Bulls.
A good man. We, me,wife and kids, ate in his restaurant. It was kind of upscale and when he saw the kids came over and chatted with us for awhile. He had a pretty full house so it was very kind of him to stop by.
Arguably the greatest ballplayer to wear the Expos uniform. I remember seeing him at Jarry Park in Montreal back in the day when I was little and he was awesome, easy going and cool. When the expos were an expansion team in 67, he was part of the reason why you became a fan. RIP Le Grand Orange!
Close call between him and Gary Carter.
Thanks for that - I never saw it before, but it is magnificent...and it applies to everyone, no matter what they did or do.
I believe he wrote if for Babe Ruth when he passed.
Rest in peace, Rusty. He was a great player with more heart than just about anyone in the game...and after his career was over, his incredible generosity proved that his heart was a lot bigger than a game.
Sincerest condolences to Rusty’s family and friends. The world is a poorer place without him...but better for having had him.
rip!
Wow - as a kid in Houston when baseball was on my mind more than girls,
I followed him and Bob Aspromonte (sp?) and the Astros so closely.
Good memories of being in the garage with dad with the game on the radio.
RIP
whoa!!..was that a great night or what?....Jason Thompson also hit one over the right field roof that night i believe. Man..bleachers were 1 dollar that night...the beer was cold. The Tigers were a 500 ball club that year...but that summer of Mark Fidrych was something else...great fun.
Yes! Rusty's! 73rd and Third if I recall. They had really good ribs.
