In every way, Rusty Staub, the beloved Mets' hitting icon, who passed away early Thursday morning at age 73, was bigger than life a bigger-than-life baseball personality, humanitarian, gourmet chef, wine connoisseur, friend-to-all and, to the fans of Montreal, quite simply, "Le Grand Orange."

Staub died at 12:30 a.m. Thursday at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Palm Beach, Florida, due to multiple organ failure. He was initially admitted with pneumonia, dehydration and an infection and had spent the last eight weeks in the hospital. He would have turned 74 on Sunday.

2,713 hits is a pretty darn good career. RIP.
A great baseball player, a great man. RIP ...
RIP, good man.
Lets go, Mets!
He picked opening day to go....RIP.
He always seemed like a great guy.
Watched him as a Montreal Expo, RIP.
Sad news. Rusty was a class act. Today is opening day in NY for the Mets.
Rest in peace.
I'll always remember him as a Met but I recall how hugely popular he was in Montreal before the Mets traded for him. He was the franchise's first star.
Le grand orange was how he was known to Expo fans. RIP.
Weird, I was just thinking of Rusty Staub this morning. They were discussing first baseball memories on the radio, this morning. Mine was 1977 Angels vs. Tigers, with my little league team. I remember only two things about that game: Frank Tanana pitched for the Angels (I knew the name from my Kellogg 3-D baseball cards), and Rusty Staub fouled a pitch back up into the screen and it stuck there, the rest of the game.
Much underrated ball player. RIP.
I remember Rusty as a Tiger Good guy and a clutch hitter which is worth way more then hitting for average.
Sad to see players of his caliber go.
May Mr. Staub rest in peace; may Almighty God welcome him home with open arms.
Good man! RIP
RIP Rusty. One of the Mets I truly liked. (Never a Mets fan ever!)
i was at Tiger Stadium..center field bleachers...June 1976..Mark Fidrych was pitching in front of 52,000 rowdy fans...and Rusty Staub hit a game winning home run and the place went insane. Great memory..
Frank Tanana.... saw him pitch a couple of times. His delivery was baffling.
I remember him well, especially with the Expos... Le Grande Orange!
I read a feature on him back in the 1970s.. he was also quite the chef as well.
He was called the Le Grande Orange while he played in Montreal. As a Mets fan he was one of the few lights during the Mets miserable run during the 70s/early 80s. I remember he had incredible year pinch hitting for the Mets during the 1983 season tying the National League record for consecutive pinch hits.
He passed on opening day. RIP.
