President Trump frequently said Mexico would pay for a wall along the southern border as he sought the presidency in 2016. Now, he is privately pushing the U.S. military to fund construction of his signature project.
Trump, who told advisers he was spurned in a large spending bill last week when lawmakers only appropriated $1.6 billion for the border wall, has begun suggesting the Pentagon could fund the sprawling construction, citing a “national security” risk.
After floating the notion to several advisers last week, he told Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) that the military should pay for the wall in a meeting last Wednesday in the White House residence, according to three people familiar with the meeting. Ryan offered little reaction to the notion, these people said, but senior Capitol Hill officials later said it was an unlikely prospect.

Extremely simple answer. Mexico will lose $40-50 Billion trade surplus with US. With resulting loss of manufacturing jobs in Mexico, and transferring those jobs to US. Manufacturing is #1 wealth creator.
Rush explained the loopholes that would allow Pres. Trump to use part of the Pentagon budget to build the wall. Didja know the Pentagon financial wizards specifically said that no money from their budget could be used to build the wall? They were stymied by another financial committee...

Not meant as a personal attack on you, but anyone who thought Mexico was going to directly pay for the wall is an idiot. Trump has other avenues to extract funds from Mexico via treaties, tariffs, deportations, etc. With Mexico's $63B trade surplus and tens of millions of illegal aliens drawing entitlements and services, it's a zero sum game that we have been losing.
So define "Mexico paying for the wall". What, is the Mexican president going to sit down and write a check?

More likely the jobs will remain there and the cost of the tariff will be passed on to U.S. consumers. Either way - manufacture there or manufacture here - the costs to U.S. consumers go up.
Just a few days ago, many here were saying those of us worried about the Omnibus bill were crazy because the wall would be built with military money and all those other crazy expenditures would be stopped by the President. OK, I guess we are at Strike 1 for now.

That's exactly what Trump was asked ore than once during the campaign. His answer was always tariffs and the like. But tariffs don't make Mexico pay for the wall. Tariffs make the American consumer pay for the wall.
