President Trump faces losing support from his base in the wake of his decision Friday to sign a controversial and much-derided $1.3 trillion spending bill -- over not only its size but its failure to fund his campaign promise of a wall on the U.S. southern border.
Trump briefly threatened to veto the legislation, voted through the House and Senate on Thursday and early Friday in order to avoid a government shutdown.
Conservatives balked at the $1.3 trillion price tag, as well as the failure to promote Republican causes such as the defunding of Planned Parenthood and the funding of the wall on the southern border in particular. While the legislation served up $1.6 billion for border security, it mainly consisted of repairs and additions to already existing fencing.

Backlash? Don’t they understand he’s playing 384D intergalactic ping pong?
Fencing? Just throw the money into a fireplace and watch it burn - just as effective.
In terms of procedure, is there anything in statutory law, which would prevent a follow-up piece of legislation next week?
In theory, the “Rand Paul Act of 2018” could itemize the most egregious domestic spending and foreign-aid pork-barrel items, and specifically repeal them with a GOP-majority house and 51-vote Senate vote?
Is that even possible? It would be popular to some.
Faux may also report that nobody even had a chance to read the 2000+ pages of this monstrosity before voting on it. Dozens of unelected and unaccountable staffers wrote it tainted with their own personal agendas!
Decidedly unAmerican and probably unConstitutional and illegal.
But faux news isn’t interested in the Constitution or the rights of the people or freedom or anything like that.
Does everybody understand the term “snookered”?
Because that is what just happened.
Wouldn’t have been possible if for once, Republicans would show some testicular fortitude and actually operate as a disciplined national party.
That is what happens when you try to herd cats.
well, at least we’d be entertained.
These people are so stupid they dont know the have been rolled by Trump once again!
I do not claim to have followed Congress’ Pork Bill all that closely.
But given the voting by Democrats and Republican Elites, did they have enough votes to override a Trump veto?
If so, I can understand why Trump begrudgingly signed the bill as otherwise he would have lost political capital with a veto override by Congress.
Particularly with the reported restriction that none of the funding can be used for the new wall designs represented by the prototypes. That was a direct slap at Trump.
I’m with Trump for this, for the time being.
It rebuilds our military. That is critical right now. I do NOT like that is failed to get an increase in spending for the wall, but let’s see what happens with that. Meanwhile Trump is thus far aggressively, approaching our massive, and ever-increasing trade deficit with communist China, and other countries.
That is the most important issue right now.
Hold off criticizing Trump for now, please.
Hey, the GOP did show fortitude. They stood up for their base - big donors who want open borders - even though they knew they would catch hell from their constituents.
I guess we should start voting democrat since they seem to be in charge no matter which party is in the majority. Maybe we can pull that party away from the left wing edge, brings some sanity to it, and have more influence than voting for the deader than dead, do nothing GOP. The democrats get their way, the pusillanimous republicans just stare at their navels.
If you vote for the D, you will get the same only worse.
True fiscal conservatives like Dave Brat & Rand Paul are getting fewer and fewer in congress.
If Trump would have vetoed the gargantuan spending bill, I am certain the happy to spend other people’s money congress had enough votes to over-ride the veto. A moral victory does not put any cash in anyone’s pockets.
And it gets worse. If Trump had vetoed the bill, he becomes less likable to the big spenders and less likely to get any of his remaining agenda passed through congress.
I recommend Trump find a way to somehow become a dictator and then he will be able to make the base happy every time. May be get some pointers from Kim Jong UN or the Mullahs in Iran.
Read the posts today re Trumps 2 letters to Ryan and McConnell dated 3/23. The omnibus is merely slush fund and not subject to the Constitutional constraints that is a budget.
Trump can reassign and redirect huge amounts of the appropriations toward his objectives.
This will be extremely interesting to observe as UniParty heads explode.
Dont worry.....it will turn out very well for us
The Republican campaign slogan is now, “Next Time!”
And he would have been blamed for the government shutdown.
That’s just it. We are “cats”, we are individualistic, self-reliant folks who don’t need the safety of groups. We think for ourselves and don’t care what anyone else thinks. That’s what makes it difficult for conservatives to unite.
