Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks to CNNMoneys Laurie Segall after the news broke this weekend that Cambridge Analytica accessed information from 50 million Facebook users without their knowledge.
LAURIE SEGALL, CNN SENIOR TECHNOLOGY CORRESPONDENT: I want to start with just a basic question, Mark. What happened? What went wrong?
MARK ZUCKERERG, FACEBOOK CEO: So this was a major breach of trust, and Im really sorry that this happened. You know, we have a basic responsibility to protect people's data. And if we can't do that, then we don't deserve to have the opportunity to serve people.
So, our responsibility now is to make sure that this doesn't happen again.

Twitter, FB, YouTube, all censoring, all halting free speech, an PDJT or anyone in his admin who can reach the general, “tv-watching-US” and not a peep about it...that concerns me...silence is compliance.
Farcebook!
he said....as he stuffed the money into the suitcases....
Fakebook is where you go every morning to find out what your friends didn’t invite you to the night before.
Isn't that how it works? Give a half-hearted apology and everything is good.
It works for the stupid, woman comic, so-called, when she held up a decapitated head of the President.
However, I do imagine that Zuckerberg will be forced to step down from any meaningful role in the company and perhaps Facebook will be busted up as Ma Bell was over thirty years ago.
If it is, that might signal Google that it's not safe either.
The double standard. Oh yes.
This is the beginning. Lots of folks have had it with him. What we need now is for someone to make a competitor to Farcebook.
WHY do young people think an apology is all that is necessary, when they are responsible for a really big screw up? Sad.
Not if someone comes up with a technically competitive alternative. He could lose millions of members and the advertising dollars will follow them to the new place.
Not that many, I reckon.
There’s too many sheep on Facebook.
Yes. I never got into it. It has always seemed pretty obvious to me that it can lead to nothing good for freedom. I would be pretty surprised if it turned out that the Intel community didn’t have a lot to do with it.
So is he just sorry Trump used the data? Will he continue to help the Democrats only?
but happy he helped Obama and the Dems
He wasn't sorry then, because he wasn't caught stealing date then.
He's sorry now ... because he was helping his candidate's opposition.
Oh well, there goes Zuck's presidential aspirations,
because he can't be trusted !
Sorry you got caught, you mean. You thought the Democrats would always be in power and have your back.
‘That’s always been the plan.’
I can remember from 2008/2009...watching business guys on the business network discuss this whole matter, and their entire take was that the only thing of value was ‘click-knowledge’ and ‘viewing-knowledge’, and that Facebook was planning to bank on that for all it’s profits and growth.
Everyone knew that, and that’s why the whole thing was FREE. If there is a problem....then just convert it to a $5 a month service and make it all private.
I’d agree that The Zuckster is sorry.
'How to pick up Jewish chicks': Vile anti-Semitic picture shows human remains on a shovel - but Facebook refused to remove it · The meme was posted to a page attributed to a Queensland man · It was shared, like and commented on tens of thousands of times · Many of the comments were anti-Semitic and offensive remarks · The image was reported by users for 'hate speech' · But Facebook said it did not breach its community standards
I certainly do like dark humor, but that is way way way over the line.
It’s very telling about the mindset of the folks at FB.
