A ban on the sale of gasoline-powered vehicles in California could come as soon as 2040 under a new proposal from a San Francisco lawmaker with strong backing from a Santa Rosa environmental group, though their hope is the landmark measure would take effect far sooner.
The Center for Climate Protection, citing both public health and climate change goals, is holding a rally Thursday night to support legislation that would limit new vehicle registration after Jan. 1, 2040 to zero-emission vehicles.
Only vehicles running entirely on batteries or fuel cells not including any type of hybrids that also consume gasoline would meet the standard spelled out in the seven sentences of a bill by Assemblyman Phil Ting, D-San Francisco.
We believe it is a game-changer, said Ann Hancock, executive director of the center, referring to the Clean Cars 2040 Act. The first vote on Tings measure is tentatively set for April 16 before the Assembly Transportation Committee, she said.
Be a part of this revolutionary moment, the center said in announcing the rally from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Glaser Center, 547 Mendocino Ave.
Hancock said in an interview the bill may seem revolutionary to a nation and a state devoted to the automobile culture, but is not far-fetched compared with whats going on in the rest of the world.
In a letter to Ting last month endorsing the bill, Hancock noted that 15 nations, representing a population of 3.23 billion people, have made soft commitments to a zero-emission vehicle (ZEV)-only future or established national ZEV targets and incentives.

Could work if they make EVs cheap
People will meet their neighbors more as with all of those EVs they can all spend a quiet evening by the fire.
Do these idiots not know that they are not the only place selling gas powered cars, or where a vehicle can be registered? Of course they know, the hate is so strong within these people that they would self terminate like a Buddhist in Vietnam, if they got enough pain out of others first.
Morons right in my own town.
Freaking idiots.
I can see EVs catching up to gas cars over 22 years as a possibility though.
Awesome. Just in time for the bullet train to be completed. ;-)
The Tesla uses about 5,000kWh to drive 12,000 miles per year.
The average household uses 10,000kWh per year.
So if you want more electric cars, you better build a whole lot more infrastructure and power plants to power all these cars.
......
And the majority of electric power in the US is generated by coal....so your fancy electric cars is really a coal burning car.
Also since most power plants are located in poor and rural areas, not the places where Tesla drivers live, Tesla drivers are really just a bunch of racist D-bags!
Take that SJW soy-boys.
Why wait? Ban them now, along with lawn equipment, buses, semi-trucks, trains, generators, aircraft, boats, etc.
And PGE the utility here is raising rates 30 prcent
Closing a3000MW nuke plant.
And will do so for next 20 years
The demoncat losers here are on their payroll
Well known fact is
And Nero fiddled...
Are they going to put in a coal fired plant or nuclear plant to produce the electricity?
Yep ,they better stock up on Bikes ,but these idiots will be long gone and another batch of idiots will rule in 2040 with even crazier ideas
They should pass a law to allow only horse and buggies in their area.
How about 2018 instead of 2040.
I can’t. The energy inputs to build an EV are much greater than a fossil full based vehicle, resulting in much higher cost and much more harm to the environment.
“Only vehicles running entirely on batteries or fuel cells not including any type of hybrids that also consume gasoline would meet the standard spelled out in the seven sentences of a bill by Assemblyman Phil Ting, D-San Francisco.”
Some Ting wrong here.
Might have known this “loony legislation” would be posed by someone whose last name can be “pronounced” by hitting an empty dog food can! I think maybe he’s related to one of the Asiana AL pilots who crashed their 777 at SFO a few years ago. Local TV Channel 2 had him as SUM TING WONG!
