Uber is temporarily halting self-driving car tests in all locations after a deadly accident.
Programs in San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Phoenix and Toronto will be paused after a woman was hit and killed overnight by an Uber self-driving car when walking across the street in Tempe, Arizona. It is likely the first pedestrian fatality caused by a self-driving car.

Yeah, hadn’t thought about putting a loved-one in car and sending them off to who knows where. No one to protect them, car quits, gets hacked, runs over someone, or takes a wrong turn into a bad neighborhood.
Yep. At this point we don’t know whose fault it was or whether the accident would have still likely happened if a human had been driving.
My Dad gave it up then too. I guess at that age I might try a self driving car.

It’s fun to play games with them. If there is one on your left, start drifting to the left out of your lane and see what happens. It’s hilarious to watch Autonomous Vehicle Road Rage. Just be sure to take cover when the turret pops up.
I am not against technology—no, I am sitting in front of 6 computer displays and have ever tech device I can afford. The problem here is that the car is killing humans and will always do so; people will excuse it as the human’s fault. The misuse of the driverless car, so many possible ways, is completely unexplored. These should never be allowed on the road. Put them in a theme park, say Disney World and let them work the bugs out but not on our streets.
Doesn’t matter. Pedestrians still have the right of way. You are not granted permission to legally mow them down outside of crosswalks.
The car was at fault. A human died. The operator of the car failed to intervene, they share guilt.
It’s the first baby steps of Skynet to dominate humans. It is the first hint of The Singularity. It will take a while for them to make us pets and even longer for them to exterminate all of us.

They don’t drink and drive or get distracted with texting.
It is anticipated that the death toll will plummet.
So insurance companies want it. Ride sharing (Uber) want it, the main cost is the driver. The trucking industry wants it, the main cost is the driver.
It remains to be seen if a consumer will buy one, although I think the inevitable is, once-proven, it’ll be a required feature (like ABS).

The technology is easy.
The financial exposure for the manufacturers of these cars is not.
Neural Networks are a significant part of these systems. We’re not just talking about lines of code anymore.
That's easy.
It's a fad, and it's pushed by people who have this delusional, dangerous faith in the reliability of any new gizmo that comes on the market.
