WASHINGTON — Andrew McCabe, the former FBI deputy director and a frequent target of President Donald Trump’s scorn, was fired Friday after the Justice Department rejected an appeal that would have let him retire this weekend.

McCabe promptly declared that his firing, and Trump’s persistent needling, were intended to undermine the special counsel’s investigation in which he is a potential witness.

The FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility, staffed with career officials, recommended McCabe’s termination. AT Sessions followed their recommendations. The IG Report will recommend McCabe be indicted for crimes committed. This termination denying the pension gives a strong message to those who violate the politically unbiased foundation of the intelligence services.

I’m a little confused. As far as I can tell, he wasn’t eligible for immediate retirement unless he’s under some plan I’ve never heard of. He has the time in service, but won’t be 50 until May.

I believe he is eligible to apply for deferred retirement, once he hits his minimum retirement age of 55 or so, depending on his year of birth.
