Why Gun Culture Is So Strong in Rural America
New York Times ^ | March 16, 2018 | ROBERT LEONARD

Posted on 03/16/2018 2:16:31 PM PDT by reaganaut1

KNOXVILLE, Iowa — As Democrats have fled rural America — or rural America has fled Democrats — many of them, living in cities, are left without an understanding of rural culture and its core values. If it isn’t on abortion, our deepest cultural divide might be on guns. The guns issue also has a profound political dimension, reliably driving rural Americans into Republican arms.

It’s been many years since I hunted squirrels and rabbits with my Grandpa Leonard. I grew up around guns and remember the pride I had when I completed my N.R.A.-sponsored gun safety training in Boy Scouts, back when the N.R.A. was a group primarily known for teaching gun appreciation and safety rather than lobbying.

I have come to understand and appreciate arguments for more gun control. But guns are important to the culture in my conservative community in Iowa, and people around here reject most gun control legislation. So I do my best to understand where they are coming from.

One morning after the mass shootings in Parkland, Fla., I spoke about them with a police-officer friend. He has led active-shooter trainings in our schools. He believes that better background checks might help prevent some gun violence, and that people need to do a better job securing their firearms (especially from suicidal teenagers).

But he doesn’t believe that significant gun control measures will ever meet approval in rural America, including a ban on AR-15-style semiautomatic rifles. He confided that many conservative police officers do not want more gun control and that other officers have told him that should they ever have to start taking guns away from people, they will quit their jobs. Like most rural conservatives, he truly believes that taking guns away from law-abiding citizens will never solve America’s gun problems, including mass shootings.

I live ‘rural.’ There are a lot of critters out here that want to EAT me, or my cats or my chickens, or raid my garden.

Shoot first, ask questions later!

This guy is a putz. A New York City Level PUTZ!

I would think the “Gun Culture” is stronger in Chicago where they shoot dozens of people per week.

the socalled “gun culture” is similarly very very strong in NYC and other urban areas, too....just ask any resident who cares about his home, family, self...(the crime rate is astronomical in big cities as compared with most smaller or rural communities... you have to be prepared to defend yourself!)

besides, the NYT is hypocritical....
even if the NYT writers don’t personally carry, they are guarded by private security men all over their office building in NY

First of all, I’m sorry for your loss.

Secondly, I lost one of my goose hunting buddies to a shotgun suicide. NONE of us saw it coming, and NONE of us ever feared for our life when we were around him, thinking he was going to shoot us or harm his family. (He did neither.)

I still don’t understand it, but people hide their pain from others so well, it seems.

I, too, never though, ‘Well, Paulie offed himself. I guess the rest of us better give up our guns now, and stop having fun socializing shooting skeet and hunting!”

Real world answers:
* Police aren’t minutes away, they may be hours away.
* Hunting is a viable way for many to add protein to the diet, while wild animals may threaten your safety or property.
So you NEED to be able to kill something on short notice.

Why is reaganaut1 such a NeverTrumper? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Trump does not act like an adult. I hope someone else will be the Republican nominee in 2020. I know that some Trump supporters think he's a "fighter" because of stuff like this, but they would laugh at a Democratic president who did this. 1 posted on ‎10‎/‎10‎/‎2017‎ ‎1‎:‎11‎:‎18‎ ‎PM by reaganaut1 [ Post Reply | Private Reply | View Replies | Report Abuse]

If someone has to have the so called ‘gun culture’ explained to them it means they don’t know much about America, our history and our timeless ideals.

When you live in a pigeon hole apartment in the sky, never touched a gun, never spent a night in a tent, don’t know how to drive, travel by public transportation, eat most meals in restaurants and your environment is almost entirely concrete it’s understandable that you don’t comprehend, or have empathy for, people who live in more conventional, traditional ways.

The left has become distant and alienated from the American ideals upon which the nation was founded and prospered for over 200 years. They consider themselves to be more evolved and look down on the rest of us.

When leftists speak of the constitution their interest is in changing it to correspond with their leftist/socialist/globalist views or eliminating it entirely.

So there is always talk here and other forums of why we should think about splitting the country up.

Some suggest a split of the elitist east and west coasts on one hand and heartland America on the other.

Others suggest a north - south split.

Maybe the best idea would be a split of city metro areas vs non-city.

Big city elitists are the constitutional outliers - not rural and small town Americans.

Notice that almost all the bad news that fills the newspapers and TV news emanates from the population centers - not small town America.

And for those elitists so concerned about the environment - it’s their cities where millions share relatively few square miles that generate most of the refuse, effluent, and emissions that city dwellers complain about.

They give us pollution then tell us how we should change our lives to compensate for it.

If elitist city dwellers in general don’t like America and the constitution (and they don’t) they should stay on their own turf, deal with their own problems (ie: Chicago and Baltimore) and leave the rest of us alone to live in freedom with the constitution as our guide.

Wall the cities off and let them function as city-states.
Let them kill each other off and run themselves and their environment into the ground!

So the NYT is going to tell its urban readers why gun culture is so strong in rural America? Let me guess - it has something to do with the fact that rural Americans are ignorant racists who want to use guns to shoot gays, blacks and women who get out of line.
IF they DID venture out to "rural America" with any shred of intellectual honesty they would be shocked at the number of women, Blacks, Latinos, and yes even gays who own firearms and use them safely and responsibly. Speaking of which, a dirty little secret, since the Pulse niteclub shooting gun stores around Orlando have seen an increase in LGBT clientele, they have an absolute right to defend themselves also.

Plenty of Democrats own AR-15s, they need to first go a on a purity spiral before they even get told by me to F off.

What a line of city slicker Beee Essss. Rural folks generally keep a shotgun for snakes & bird hunting, a .22 plinker for rabbits and other small varmints, a .30 something for medium/large game and an intermediate caliber for coyotes, hogs etc. Always been that way in my area for the 60 years I've been here. Can't think of any resident near me ever killed a gay, black or woman in these parts.

I live in rural America and just today I built a new shooting bench for my backyard range. Next will be new backstops for my 100 and 200 yard targets.
