Rory Gallagher was one of best! I never saw him in concert for some reason though, and I saw quite a few back in the day.
I do have almost every single one of his albums though...he put out two studio albums and a couple of live albums with his first band Taste which are great!!

No, there's certainly no film (or even photos that I've been able to locate). It was 1967, very near the end of The Showmen who had National hits in 1961 (
"It Will Stand") and 1964 ("39-21-46"), as well as an string of regional (Northern Soul) hits. Being from Norfolk, VA, they were the biggest thing locally since Gene Vincent and the Bluecaps, so even I was aware of their already established legacy at the top of the Beach Music and Shag dance culture.
I was just 12 years-old that year, and had already performed several seasons as percussionist with The Virginia Beach Civic Orchestra. When the City of Virginia Beach established their first "Little Miss VA Beach Pageant", they recruited musicians from the orchestra to accompany the tykes. It paid $25 a night for rehearsals and $50 for the night of the performance, but in order to earn that City check, I had to register and get a Social Security card. Anyhow, General Johnson came up to me that night, introduced himself and asked if I'd like to sit-in with The Showmen. Evidently, his daughter (or perhaps it was a niece) was a contestant in the pageant and my versatility impressed him.
That summer, I joined The Showman on the 7th Street Waterfront Stage for a couple of tunes, including "Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy". That appearance led to my joining them again at The Peppermint Beach Club at 15th Street and Atlantic Avenue which was the east coast mecca for beach music. Because they sold beer, I had to get a special waver from the City just to enter the club.
That exposure led to my first major band, "The New Directions" in 1968, which interesting enough evolved into "The Stingrays" which I rejoined in the mid-eighties thru early nineties and are still performing under the leadership of founding vocalist
Bob Jones. It seems that I can always fall back on Beach Music to earn a living.

I love your music stories. It always gets me started listening to the tunes you post about, and then I find related tunes, and before you know it, Ive spent the whole afternoon listening to music, and not getting my chores done. 😆 But I usually end up downloading some tunes to the playlist I listen to when doing chores, so I guess it evens out. LOL
