The chain — whose history traces back to a post-World War II baby furniture store — has spent many decades as the country's largest dedicated toy emporium. Today's parents are the millennial generation who grew up with the Internet and approach purchasing decisions and time they spend with children differently from baby boomers. Generally, foot traffic is falling at brick-and-mortar stores. And children are playing differently than they used to decades ago.

Kids don’t play with toys. They sit in front of the tv or play video games.

No big deal. Overpriced, staff didn’t know their toys, and limited selection. We went into the store once or twice a year, then bought what we wanted, for a lower price on Amazon.

"...Mattel and Hasbro owed $135M and $59M..."

Likely soon to be filing for bankruptcy themselves.

Not mentioned in this article is that a number of PE firms which include Romney’s Bain capital loaded the chain with 7.5 billion in debt in a leveraged buy out while paying themselves massive fees. They bled the company dry. Romney. Bain capital. Scum.

I’ll miss them. We have a precious little granddaughter whom we could “persuade” to come visit us with the bribe of the toy of her choice. Mom and Dad were always to busy to make the trip. But when cute little daughter pleaded long enough, they would eventually crack.

It is wonderful when people visit our local bicycle shop, talk to the owner about bikes, helmets, and accessories for an hour...and then drive home to order online to save $5.00.

And many parents buy online now. 90% of my kids toys were bought at Target which has a decent toy selection and was right down the road.

I think that’s horrible. I buy online often but I would never walk into a store to shop and then buy online.

A pity - there’s no other toy stores in my area so that pretty much the end of that for children here.

OTOH - the store in my area sucked. Was always run down inside had a poor selection and nobody manning the registers or offering service.

Maybe the memory goes with age, but, I swear that at one time, this chain was called “Children’s Discount Supermart” and their motto was toys are us, rather than the name of the stores being Toys R Us.

I’ve searched online and can’t find any reference to this.

Off topic, but I also swear that the former Zayre chain, used to be called Towers before it was Zayre. Again, I can’t find anything online to confirm that memory.

Kids don’t want toys anymore. They want PlayStation, IPhones, Ipads and such. Things that do nothing to develop imaginations and diminishes social skills.

Very depressing world we live in. Jesus can’t come back soon enough.
