Marco Rubio introduces bill to keep nation on year-round daylight saving time

Responding to legislation that cleared the Florida Legislature last week, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio has introduced a pair of bills in Congress, one allowing Florida to stay in daylight saving time year-round and the other putting the entire nation on year-round daylight saving time.

Florida lawmakers passed a bill sponsored by state Sen. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, that asks Congress to permit the state to maintain daylight saving time all year. Congress currently allows states to opt out of daylight saving time and stay in standard time year-round, but not the other way around.

“Reflecting the will of the Sunshine State, I proudly introduce these bills that would approve Florida’s will and, if made nationally, would also ensure Florida is not out of sync with the rest of the nation,” Rubio said in a press release.

Rubio’s press release includes a list of benefits from staying in daylight saving time year-round, including increased economic activity, fewer robberies, reduced car crashes, increased physical fitness and even a reduction in childhood obesity.

It was tried under Carter, and it was an EPIC FAIL!

Moms all over were screaming about sending their kids to school in the dark.

Why on earth would Congress have any say in the matter?

Agreed, this is long overdue. No reason to maintain an outdated system that was designed for an agrarian economy. The switch causes thousands of auto accidents every year without any upside.

The kids where I live are already going to school in the dark since the bus comes by before 6:00am. Even on Standard time it’s still dark here so I’d rather stay on DST and get an extra hour of light when I get home.

How has Arizona survived all these years without it?

What’s Arizona’s death toll of kids who have to wait for a school bus in the dark?

Fall Back one more time, in 2018, and stay there permanently nationwide.

Agree. We want to rid ourselves of Daylight Saving Time, not keep it around permanently.

Something to do with the Uniform Commerce Clause

Since no one can agree on which time, Daylight Savings or not, split the difference.

Pick the 1/2 hour in between as the current time, put everyone on it, make it so.

Agree - the world has changed enough that DST is a waste. If people/businesses want different hours, let them change the times they run on for their own purposes - hell we have all sorts of flex time businesses as it is - leave the clocks alone.

As a pretty much life long resident of Florida I had high hopes for this young man at one time......no more I’m afraid.

This is perhaps the only good idea Marco has had since losing the presidential primary.
