125 people, including some high school students, have contracted HIV, syphilis or both in one of the largest sexually transmitted infection clusters discovered in Milwaukee, health care advocates confirmed to the Journal Sentinel.
This is an epidemic people are not talking about, and it leads to people taking unnecessary risks, said Melissa Ugland, a public health consultant who works with a number of local organizations that focus on public health.
There has been no announcement to the general public from the Milwaukee Health Department as of Tuesday.
Fewer than 10% of the 125 people who tested positive are Milwaukee Public Schools students, but health care experts anticipate that the numbers could increase as more people come forward.
A cluster is an aggregation of disease closely grouped in time and place. This cluster was identified as such because the people in it could all be connected, and were in contact with each other during a 12-month, identifiable period, Ugland said.
Most of those in the group are men and 45% were HIV positive, Ugland and other health care advocates said.
Ugland said she did not know which school or schools were impacted by the cluster but she said it could be several.
In a statement, MPS said the Health Department informed the district that the entire city is experiencing an increase in sexually transmitted infections in young people ages 15 to 24.
"Because schools have a significant number of students in the 15-18 age group, we are working with the Milwaukee Health Department, in a collaborative and preventive effort, to share information with young people in middle schools and high schools to keep them healthy and to protect their health," the statement said.
The cluster was still considered ongoing; they were continuing to try to track down some folks, Ugland said.

Homosexuals being homosexuals. This is what they all want because they keep promoting it.
I bet there is a patient zero with both those diseases.
PLEASE! Come to Wisconsin. Avoid Milwaukeestan and Madistan and you’ll be just fine. :)
Most of them were men... so this must be a gay stat?
“I bet there is a patient zero with both those diseases.”
Easily. I’m pretty sure we won’t be hearing about this beyond this article.
I’m sure these reporters have already been fired...
Play stupid games win stupid prizes.
Wasnt nationwide marriage equality supposed to put a damper on all this?
Grew up in the Milwaukee area (far north suburb of Bayside) more than half a century ago. Continued to visit every summer until my mom passed away last year. Milwaukee can be lovely; the magnificent parks; lakeside north to Bayside; southside is generally nice as well. West and Northwest side has badly deteriorated. Case in point: when I was growing up, Capital Court and Northridge were upscale malls in nice neighborhoods. Today, best as I can determine, both are closed in the midst of badly deteriorated neighborhoods. Whole areas of the city are “no go zones” for whites. More than 2 decades ago our daughter was born in a west side hospital. While awaiting some dr appointment we decided to visit a nearby park. A gang of young black men noticed us, headed our way. We hastened to some nearby construction workers for protection. My sister stubbornly lives in the city, in a neighborhood which seems to have survived the deterioration. She invites me to come back to live in Milwaukee. The rents would be cheap, but I could never take that Wisconsin winter that I grew up in.
Those ended when Bubba moved away.
And don’t get me started on Chicago, where I also lived for several years. Mirrors Milwaukee, with beautiful lakeside parks stretching north to Evanston and beyond. But then you have this unending bleak and dreary west side, and the entire south side stretching around to Gary Indiana, where we feared a mechanical breakdown on our trips north to Wisconsin.

Or in the process, become more
promiscuous. Practice safe sex.
And only if you know the combination.
I would guess there will be an announcement now that it has hit the news....
We have similar memories. It was a great place to grow up. All of my Uncles were either cops, firefighters or worked for Miller Brewing.
Both Grandpas and my Dad worked for Allis Chalmers, building big construction equipment, parts for ships and parts/panels for NASA rocket ships.
I’m happy I had the childhood that many in Milwaukee are now being denied due to Democrats destroying a once great city. :(
We lived there together then. We fled in 78.
My dad worked in the foundry tucked into the backside (east) of Allis Chalmers. Keep talkin, pretty soon we’ll be related...
Keeping it on the down low...
For a big City, Milwaukee used to be a small Town! :)
Or ANY consequences, for that matter.
