In Florida, one of the nation's largest school districts has overhauled its discipline policies with a single purpose in mind to reduce the number of children going into the juvenile justice system.
It's a move away from so-called "zero tolerance" policies that require schools to refer even minor misdemeanors to the police. Critics call it a "school to prison pipeline."
Civil rights and education activists say the policy can be a model for the nation.
Under a new program adopted by the Broward County School District, non-violent misdemeanors even those that involve alcohol, marijuana or drug paraphernalia will now be handled by the schools instead of the police.

The wierdo shooter would have been prohibited from buying firearms on the background check if the schools had reported his crimes instead of covering them up to get federal dollars.
They shut the school-to-prison pipeline and opened the school-to-morgue pipeline.
So the school violence is an acceptable tradeoff? Do they understand cause and effect?
Did you know cops were called to his house nearly 40 times? But yeah, blame the school.
Down in Miami-Dade, the cops didn’t arrest Treyvon Martin after finding marijuana, burglary tools and jewelry in his backpack. This seems to be a problem in more than one Floriduh school district.
And the FBI was alerted to an online video post where he aspired to be a “professional school shooter.”
> Curb School-To-Prison Pipeline
Or, in words normal people use: “keep criminals out of prison”.
It’s not typical graduates who were in the pipeline. Those in the pipeline were there for a reason and the liberal solution was not to keep them from committing crimes but to keep them out of jail even after crimes.
A big part of liberal policy is keeping criminals out of prison. They can find all sorts of reasons to blame everyone but the criminals and justify releasing them (or not putting them in prison to begin with). Clintons aren’t the only liberals who are above the law.
Same county. Treyvonn was also a Broward County school attendee, where he was found with drugs and stolen property.
And their enlightened policies cost 17 people their lives
This is the REAL smoking gun.
<><> stop enforcing the law on school campuses
<><> they improved student behavior statistics
<><> they artificially reduced the number of reported student crimes, and
<><> they altered the ethnic makeup of student arrests. The intended result? To pocket more state and federal funding.......a greedy money grab that caused 17 teen deaths.
But waitit gets even worse.
In 2016, Obama used Browards progressive model agreement to stop enforcing the law on school
campuses nationwide. Compliance with the Obama guidelines play a role in determining the level of
federal funding directed toward schools and law enforcement.
What could possibly go wrong?
“non-violent misdemeanors”
Don’t kid yourself, they didn’t report anything.
The article fails to mention this was the construct of the NAACP.
This is the furtherance of the “no-consequences” crowd.
For decades school administrations have refused to suspend or expel the trouble makers because it affects attendance records and the corresponding Federal matching dollars.
I think it is interesting that they targeted a very highly white population to be the model for other districts to follow.
This should raise some eyebrows...

Not blaming the school, but this policy resulted in the police NOT being called when he showed up on campus, with knives and ammo in his backpack.
This is what happens when you turn a Law Enforcement agency, into a social services agency.
