It s quite an accomplishment to be the all-time hit leader, but I agree with your comment about average. Also, I would expect a lead-off hitter to be the all-time leader in number of hits, since they would have the most number of opportunities.

Some records are set just because the person setting them hung around for a long time.

Pirmin Zurbriggen was the top FIS skier of all time, in my humble opinion. His 40 wins in FIS races is a distant seventh on the all-time list among men, but he won races in every discipline, won four all-around World Cup titles, and only competed for nine years before he retired in his prime at the young age of 27.
