When Coral Springs police officers arrived at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14 in the midst of the school shooting crisis, many officers were surprised to find not only that Broward County Sheriff's Deputy Scot Peterson, the armed school resource officer, had not entered the building, but that three other Broward County Sheriff's deputies were also outside the school and had not entered, Coral Springs sources tell CNN. The deputies had their pistols drawn and were behind their vehicles, the sources said, and not one of them had gone into the school.

Sounds like the problem is with Broward County
It used to be that we need self defense because we can’t count on the police to be there in time.
Now it’s that we count on the police to defend even if they are there.

This is sickening to think, that they had an armed cop at the school, and he didn’t go into action.

Since Columbine, I’ve read most if not all PDs have changed their policies to go immediately after school shooters. Broward seems to be an exception.

Not really true. They go in immediately when the whole SWAT team arrives. And a supervisor. And the proper perimeter is established to make sure that the shooter can’t escape. I have a cop in my family and he told me that they aren’t John McClane. They aren’t even the donut cop outside.
