Guns and I go back a long way.
My father was a champion skeet shooter. A picture of him aiming his favorite pump skyward has pride of place in our living room. He owned fine rifles and shotguns, and he valued them.
My first experience with pulling a trigger came late, by family standards. I was already 7 or 8 when my dad and Uncle George took me out back of Old Lilys house and handed me a sawed-off shotgun (illegal then and now) kept handy for woodchucks and rattlesnakes. The recoil didnt knock me off my feet, but my shoulder ached for weeks.
Im blessed to have few material regrets, but I still feel a sting when I recall how, after my fathers bankruptcy, we had to sell his guns to put food on the table. Those arms were important to him and, thus, to me.
I served in the US Army, including unforgettable years in an infantry battalion. I fired my share of automatic weapons, from M16A1s to machine guns and even Kalashnikovs. (Lets not talk about dud-grenade disposal . . .)
And Im a gun owner. As I write these lines, theres an 1858 Tower musket behind me and a Colt on my desk.
But I believe, on moral, practical and constitutional grounds, that no private citizen should own an automatic weapon or a semi-automatic weapon that can easily be modified for automatic effects.

Didn’t realize automatic was synonymous with assault...
Poignant Peters is a contrarian opportunist... not to be taken seriously by any side.
Fine. Don't own one then. But your opinion does not give you the right or the authority to forbid any other citizen from owning, keeping or bearing such.
He's anti-Trump and somewhat of a closet LIBERAL.
For years Ive heard that the term assault weapon or rifle came from the Nazi military command. They were trying to convince Hitler to approve the manufacture of a new select-fire weapon and pitched it as an assault rifle because they rightfully decided that Hitler would like the name.
I dont remember where I first read that, or what weapon the writer claimed was the one the generals were pitching. Over the years I have heard and read that story several times basically unchanged and always the emphasis was that the term was coined by Nazi generals to sell Hitler on authorizing manufacturing a gun they wanted.
I’m a Vet and I think we should try banning mass murder and other crimes first to see how that works.......
Weapon definition: any instrument or device for use in attack or defense in combat, fighting, or war, as a sword, rifle, or cannon.
REMF was used by the WWII and Korean War types who trained us.
Glad to hear you are still passing it on.
He was on Fox again today Sat shouting his BS. Peters is a disgrace to anyone who has been in combat. He claimed the bump stock can enable 750 rounds per minute or something far out.
“4 Myths About “Assault Rifles” , Sunday, February 17, 2013” [Cheerio, post 186]
The author of the 4 Myths post got it wrong - partially - in debunking the first myth: “Most soldiers shoot in bursts or semi-auto to (greatly) increase accuracy”
Full auto fire doesn’t not increase “accuracy” (thought what it means to the author isn’t perfectly clear here).
Troops use full auto fire because they’ve been trained to; most don’t even know why. Today’s US Army doctrine is based on the conclusions of SLA Marshall, journalist, author, and wannabe Army officer who revolutionized after-action reporting and oral history data collection during World War Two. He declared that only one of every four infantrymen fired their individual weapons in action; this led to the definition of “firepower” as “shots per minute”. Considerable doubt has since been cast on “SLAM’s” notions, but the Army establishment still loves him to a fault.
Since the day portable automatic weapons hit the field, ground force leaders have loved volume fire and continually demand more and more of it. Few have made it clear to weapon designers and logistics providers as to why. The theory seems to be that if our forces put enough lead in the air, some of it will hit an adversary eventually. In the meantime, the noise and fuss might induce foes to keep their heads down; our side can advance and vanquish.
A great many ground-force types have told me that hand-held full-auto fire can increase hit probability. Sometimes. Most peg max effective range of such fire at around 50-75m.
Ralph Peterless is a left wing dork.
Assault is full auto not semi auto!
Think about the term “gun violence”. I’ve never met a VIOLENT gun. I’ve met some violent people. And THEY will, if disposed to become killers, find ways to kill! Would you also prohibit sale of materials like diesel fuel, ammonium nitrate and steel pipe and fittings - ALL necessary to the functioning of a modern society and innocent enough alone but - as demonstrated by muslim morons - capable of killing hundreds at a time in an instant?
The FBI COULD have kept this idiot in Florida away from his guns BUT THEY WERE TOO BUSY to even INTERVIEW HIM???
Ask yourself WHY - in this highly computerized culture - our various law enforcement agencies DO NOT share ALL background information on CLEAR potential threats with one another? Am I paranoid to think that perhaps these sad murders of innocents aid in advancing some globalist totalitarian One World agenda as they attempt to whip otherwise intelligent people into a frenzy to herd them in a direction they wish them to go?
They are frustrated that we proles have over 350 million firearms with which to resist them. We must first be DISARMED if they are to SAFELY have their pseudo Utopian way with us!
Look up Hegelian Dialectic for starters. There are and have been for dozens of decades - forces at work in the world that pay no heed to what most of us consider rules of civilized behavior. They are only guided by what advances their agenda. Does the old phrase “You can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs” come to mind.
In their warped minds, do innocent kids = eggs?
Some quotes to ponder:
A free people should not only be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might abuse them, WHICH WOULD INCLUDE THEIR OWN GOVERNMENT. That from George Washington!
And the late DEMOCRAT Senator and presidential candidate Hubert Humphery offered this on the topic:
“The right of citizens to bear arms is just one guarantee against
arbitrary government, one more safeguard against the tyranny
which now appears remote in America, but which historically
has proved to be always possible.”
(Ed. Comment: Heavens, how the Democrats have changed!)
And consider the IRONY that the 4th Estate (which has largely morphed into a 5TH COLUMN) always raises the false argument that the Founders never envisioned the advent of weapons like the AR15 and other modern arms. Those 56 men were students of history and the knew well the failings of human nature. They understood that the Constitutional economic and political system they sought to leave as their legacy would produce abundance and liberty for more people than any in history. They ALSO knew that it would spawn advances in technology that would some day make the physical artifacts common in THEIR day the relics they have become in ours. THAT INCLUDED WEAPONS of all sorts!
Now here’s the irony: If one applies to the Second Amendment the media’s claim that ordinary citizens ...the people.. today should ONLY be allowed to possess unrifiled, muzzle loaded flintlock muskets, that logic would limit THEM to writing today’s latest fake news by dipping quill pens into ink wells and scribbling on parchment!
And for those who still believe that the media are benign innocents simply journalizing events here, I’m compelled to add this from Mark Twain:
“Do not fear the enemy, for your enemy can only take your life. It is far better that you fear the media, for they will steal your HONOR. That awful power, the public opinion of a nation, is created in America by a horde of ignorant, self-complacent simpletons who failed at ditching and shoemaking and fetched up in journalism on their way to the poorhouse. Mark Twain
Let me wrap this with a fact MOST humans find so disturbing that they refuse to confront it: MOST OF THE HUMANS KILLED OVER HISTORY WERE MURDERED BY GOVERNMENTS.
It’s called DEMOCIDE and 260 MILLION people died at the hands of a government in just the 20th century.
And THAT is why those of us who still possess critical thinking skills and have families STILL outnumber those who repeatedly call for steps toward the ultimate goal of the left: Total disarmament of this population.

“Im a military man and I think we should ban assault weapons”
I`m a military man and I don’t think we should ban semi automatic rifles. You fraud.
“From warrior to wussy whackjob. I have to wonder if any military man who would so quickly and easily give up his constitutional rights actually knew what he was fighting to protect.”
He’s been a dick on many subjects and as soon as Fox trots him out on goes mute. Can’t stand sight of him.
Telephone colonel Peters and his wife Fonda.
“(Ed. Comment: Heavens, how the Democrats have changed!)”
JFK was an NRA life member.
“Assault is full auto not semi auto!”
Actually, I was asking you an honest question about handguns. Aren’t they semi auto? Then again, wouldn’t any gun that you have to keep pulling the trigger to fire a round be considered semi auto?
“And in my humble opinion, anyone that spends over 22 years in the US Military, with 20 of it being an officer and cannot achieve better than 0-5...is a turd.”
Have a heart sarge..I only made O-4 in 20 and it’s tough being a turd. But as a career non com you probably saw your fair share of world class ring knocking asswipes so I know where you are coming from.
